Forge marks tell what forging company made the raw forging (upper receiver). Companies use a variety of different ones from time to time, so it's kind of hard to be certain. Barrels on the other hand, like Bushmaster, DPMS, and Colt, have brand specific markings on them. Barrels markings can be of great importance IF the upper is FACTORY.
Cerro and Cardinal forge provide uppers to many companies, so there is no "real" way to be sure unless you get it from a reliable source. |

My LMT is laser engraved on the left front side of the upper with "LMT". My GG&G is marked "GG&G" in the same place. Also, the barrels stampings are usually pretty distinctive once you've seen a few....the GG&G is obviously made by LMT and the Sabre barrels are extremely unique.
