| Hey everyone I have a colt 20 inch upper and would like a more (tactical) upper. I was reading around on the board and really got confused on what length barrel I have to get to not have to do the sbr paperwork and also what are a few things that I need to put on the must have worth the extra money list when purchasing a new upper? I don't normally shoot further the 100 yrds and this gun will be for home defense. Thanks in advance for the replies. |

A 14.5" bbl with a pinned extended A2 FH is legal (>16") w/no paperwork = the easy route unless you want to go uber short...like 10.3...no reason to go anywhere in between IMO as there just isn't that much difference between 10.5-12.5-14.5 that makes 12.5 worth the SBR paperwork...plus now you're "on the Man's RADAR".
I ran a CQBR (10.3) here i 'stan for a while and while it was great in and out of cars and to carry...not much good for anything else...accurate little booger but you could probably catch the bullets at 200m (J/K). |

You need a barrel length of at least 16" for it not to be considered SBR. If you have a 14.5" barrel, the flash hider needs to be pinned/welded in place, to bring it to the legal 16". If you go with a 16" you have the option of a removable flash hider. May not seem like a big deal but at least it allows you options.
As far as must-have options on your upper, it depends on your purpose. If for home defense and for plinking, you would probably want a flat-top upper receiver with M4 feed ramps, and some sort of modular handguard system for mounting accessories. The rest, unfortunately, is always up for personal preference as you sort through the thousands of different parts, manufacturers and configurations. Good luck. |

Go with the 16" and a removable flash hider. I have both and the 14.5 isn't any shorter or lighter with the pinned FH. |

+1 for a 16" barrel.
14.5" with a pinned and welded F/H limits your options for FF handguards that require removal of the FSB, or application of a new muzzle device without destroying the one that's already on there. The weight savings are negligible and the OAL is roughly 1" less than a 16" barrel with non-perm muzzle device attached (depending on device). If you do choose a 16" upper, look into the midlength gas system. |
