Since 99.9% of my ar15 shooting is going to be 100 yards or less,
do I really need the 5.56 ammo?
I know the 5.56 works really well on the Zombies during SHTF,
but I havnt had that problem occurr around here.

You need to make that decision for yourself.  Obviously, a 200 fps reduction in muzzle velocity will cause a substantial reduction in fragmentation range of any fragmenting round.  Given the trend towards shorter barrel lengths, this can easily reduce fragmentation range to far less than 100 yards for most fragmenting loads.

Ultimately, you have to figure out what any given load is going to do in YOUR rifle, and then decide if you can live with that performance.

It will happen - mark my words - it will happen...

Why would you NOT want to shoot the 556?  The cost difference is very neglible.
