I am looking for a good bullet / round in 556/223 to shoot gophers. I do reload but am not yet set up to load 223.
so suggestions both factory and hand loads will be appreciated. I have used hornady v-max in my 300win mag on prairie dogs worked good and I loaded some speer tnt's for my 243 before but they have a max fps recommendation. Thanks in advanced for your help. I should also note that I will also use them on coyotes. |

Try some of this.. $20 for a box of 50
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/533596/fiocchi-extrema-ammunition-223-remington-40-grain-hornady-v-max-box-of-50 ETA: just noticed the out-of-stock. I do know that if you backorder Midway often gets it back in and ships it well before the date on the site. They won't charge you until it ships. |

I'd be cautious with 40 grain bullets out of a fast twist barrel. I've seen 40 grainers disintegrate on leaving the barrel when shot through a Colt 1 in 7 twist 20" barrel. I have a 1in9 20" You are fine. Any HP will do. I wouldnt go over the 69gr SMK some 1/9 twist have accuracy problems using the long bullets like the 77gr SMK |

I have a 1in9 20" I have had problems with the SX and blitz type bullets not making it to the target,Colt 1/9. For volume shooting I use the Corbin swaged 22lr jacket 60grhp. These tend to make it to the target ok. Accuracy can be quite good, and they are very explosive. The bullets are very inexpensive for me .015/ea. Right now Rocky Mountain Reloading, sponsor, has a good deal on 556 projos. Midway's Dogtown bullets are affordable and surprisingly accurate. If you have the bucks, Barnes has some accurate and explosive. Have you tried Nozler 2nds, NozlerPro Shop.com Good prices when available. |

Fiocchi 50gr V-Max from Cabelas or Midway when on sale is a good deal
There are also 45 and 50gr JHP from Remington and Winchester, but I wouldnt go lighter than 50gr in a 1:9 personally. There is 55 and 60gr V-Max, thats probably what I would use for reloading varmint rounds. |
