Has anyone ever run vltor a5 buffer kit on a 14.5" midlength barrel?  Pros, cons?  What buffer weight did you use?

I plan on using the spikes 14.5" midlength lightweight barrel.

Yes sir.

I've used it on two BCM EAG uppers with A2 flash hiders.

With M193, 855, and MK262 it ran like a top with the A5 and A5-3 buffers.

With 69gr and 55gr .223 I used the A5 buffer but it ran fine with the A5-3 as well.

It shoots about as soft as you get without going to a low mass carrier and light buffer setup.

You'll like it.

I run one with standard weight buffer on 16" midlength all the time.  Assuming you're running a full mass carrier you should be fine.  If you plan on getting an adjustable gas block (Syrac or SLR are the 2 most recommended) again you should be fine as you can turn up the gas to compensate for the slightly shorter dwell time.  If you want to run a little less gas you can go to a lighter buffer to reduce felt recoil just keep in mind how a lighter carrier/buffer can potentially affect reliability and bolt bounce.

If you need further explanation of bolt bounce (typically only an issue on select fire or full auto) or potential reliability issues from running both a lightweight carrier and buffer please let me know.  Otherwise I am sure another member of AR15.com will be along shortly to answer those questions if they apply.

All that said remember what ever gas block you choose will pretty much have to stay on as it will not clear the pinned muzzle device once installed.

No 14" here, but I run that kit with the buffer it comes with on a 10, 12, and 16" rifle with zero issues.

I think the point of the kit is to take the guesswork out of buffers. That whole chasing down correct buffer weights always baffles me. Then again, I chose the A5 kit from the beginning.

Slash's heavy buffers makes different weight buffers for that kit if you choose to experiment outside of what the kit comes with.

VLTOR makes buffers from A5-0 through A5-4.

I've never seen any properly built upper that wouldn't run on a standard A5 buffer or H2 carbine buffer.

Don't fret, they come around often...speaking from experience  My first 2 ARs were Spike's 14.5" with 12" SAR and the other with a 13.2" SAR rail.  I also have another 14.5" BCM lightweight also with A5 kit.  One Spike's uses stock 5.3oz buffer, the other a H3 6oz buffer, and the BCM also stock 5.3oz buffer.  All 3 have Sprinco Green chrome silicon springs.   All three shoots smooth with every ammo I've put through them- PMC bronze, AE 223, Prvi 75gr match, Fed XM193 and SM855, IMI M193 and M855, PMC X-Tac 193 and 855.

With the weaker/heavier ammo I've tried, ie PMC bronze and Prvi 75gr match, the 6oz buffer cycled fine but I can tell it was a bit softer recoiling than with the stock 5.3oz buffer.
I also have 2 newly built SBRs I outfitted with A5s, a 9" Houston Armory spiral fluted barrel, and the other a 12" Seekins barrel, both 300blk.  Both I elected to install Vltor gas blocks instead of going with adjustable blocks.  I have not had a chance to take these two out to the range yet, so I cannot confirm the A5 functioning in these...
