If I order a 14.5" barrel I need to have a comp pinned and welded so that its longer than 16 inches.  But if the ff rail is 13.2", or even a 14", will this cause problems when trying to weld the comp on?  From what I understand the ff rail has to be on before the comp is screwed on.  I cant have the comp put on and then install a ff rail correct?  So does this whole setup cause any problems or is this do-able?  Im just wondering if the rail will get in the way of the pinning and welding.

It really depends if the muzle device will be exposed enough to do the job.  If it is cover the hand guard really good––You don't want a bunch of hot metal landing on there.  Might help if you post up what you will be using.

Depends on the rail, gas block, barrel nut, and muzzle device being used.

For example, a Miculek brake is pretty big - a lot of stuff won't fit past it.  An A2 FH is pretty small, most FF tubes will fit past it, but most one-piece gas blocks won't.

well I'm thinking a
yhm low pro gas block short version
battlecomp 1.5
standard barrel nut from bcm
either a DD 12.0 or 14.0 lite rail or
DD mk18 RIS II 12.0 or 14.0
and all of this on a 14.5" middy barrel

Good
battlecomp 1.5
Great
standard barrel nut from bcm
Won't work
either a DD 12.0 or 14.0 lite rail or
DD mk18 RIS II 12.0 or 14.0
Great

Daniel Defense barrel nuts are specific to their forearms unless using an Omega or Omega Drop-in: they use milspec barrel nuts
and all of this on a 14.5" middy barrel

You're designing a heavy rifle in your mind. The Daniel Defense barrel nut, collar, and gas block should all be on the barrel prior to pinning and welding the BC. ADCO can do this work for you. Also get that gas block pinned while it is at your chosen gunsmith. Much more secure method than setscrews.

Consider the new DD MFR tube. Sufficiently long to cover the gas block and lighter. The MK18RISII is a great rail but you see more tubes and customizeable forearms now that the move toward comfort and ease of placement of accessories. I will be redoing my SBR with the MFR sometime this year.  Good luck with your build. Pics when you're finished

Yea I kinda thought I needed a certain barrel nut with these rails.  So most rails should fit over the battlecomp and gas block?  Yea I'll look more into the modular ff tubes, I havent really but Ive heard good things about them.  Thanks alot for the help!

DD is one of the best and some say they are the best..  I have to think with that gas block anything should slide over it.

The rail itself will generally fit over most muzzle devices.  The barrel nut generally will also.  It's the gas block that's the issue, it won't fit over the muzzle device, and the barrel nut won't fit over the gas block.  When permanently attaching a muzzle device, you only need the gas block and barrel nut installed.  After the device has been pinned and welded, then you can install it on the upper and lastly install the rail.

Ok, so the barrel nut will kinda just hang out on the end of the barrel until I'm ready to mount it to the upper receiver?  Other than that, this makes sense so thanks for the help.  oh, and do the DD and spikes rails come with the barrel nut you need or are they seperate?

Yep.

The only rails that won't come with their own barrel nut are the ones that mount to a stock barrel nut.  The Omega is the only DD rail that uses the stock barrel nut, all the rest come with their own, as does the Spikes.
