i like the burris, but i'm trying to stay under 4-500 bucks.  i've got it narrowed down to three possibles, konus m30, millet, and grsc.  whats says the hive?

Since the GRSC is not currently on the market, that one is out.  I have no experience with the Konus, so can't comment there.  I have the Millet and like it alot.  Recticle is perfect for close up at 1x, and works pretty well for longer distances even without having any extranious lines and grids.  Read through the Millet DMS thread, it'll take you a while, but overall it gets a big thumbs up from most customers.  I don't see myself upgrading any time soon, the DMS is serving my needs perfectly.

I can only comment on the Konus M30 as that is the only one I have any experience with. It has VERY good glass for a $200 optic. It has held zero for the 1200 rounds that I've had it. The only thing I don't like is the fact that the turrets are so big. They do lock, so you don't move them when you bump them. The blue illumination is a good idea IMHO, but does wash out in daylight.

All in all, I think you get an awful lot of optic for the money.

ETA: Here it is on my Recce.

I've owned both the millet dms-1 and the weaver 1.5-4.5 (sold the millet)

Go with the Weaver, the glass is sooooo much better.

I have Leupold 1X4 shotgun scopes on both of my M4s. They cost $199.00 pretty much everywhere. I have used them effectively in high speed training from a few feet out to 400 yards. The shorter zero parallax is better for the distance that I am training for principally, inside 50 yards. The heavy reticle is incredibly fast while not ruling out precise fire. I use Armalite 1 piece mounts for both. They are rugged and I will bet my life on them.

Thanks for the write up.  This, along with the Weaver V3 have been on my "short" list of quality, inexpensive low mag scopes for my AR.  The Weaver is probably winning out at the moment just due to price.

A few questions on the Leupy:

  • Is the 1x a "true" 1x?  I know the Weaver is damn close from the reviews I have read and this is important to me.

  • How does the shorter parallax effect longer rage shots (100 yards plus)?  I'm completely ignorant to the idea of parallax so excuse me if the question is a dumb one.  The articles I have read regarding the issue were a little over my head (guess it dont take much).  I guess I just dont understand the difference between having a 75 yard parallax and a 100 yard parallax.

Thanks for any and all replies.

I happen to own a Weaver 1X3 as well by the way. It is on my son's 30-30 and I have nothing bad to say about it. There are several reasons I prefer the Leupold 1X4 for tactical applications. First is the heavy reticule which is much faster to acquire under all conditions. The Weaver has a noticeably finer reticle. At the longer limits of the scopes range, the 4 power is very much welcome and a substantial (25%) improvement over the 3X of the Weaver. Neither scope has true 1X, yet both can be used effectively with both eyes open for CQB work. The Leupold parallax is set at 75 yards. The Weaver 1X3 parallax is set for 100 yards I believe. I am not an authority on the science of optics. I can tell you that at the distance at which a scope's parallax is properly set, the relationship between your shooting eye and your scope becomes the least critical. At other distances the eye must be in perfect alignment in order for the round to go precisely where it is aimed. Google up parallax for a better explanation. Since most carbine engagements and practice are mostly inside 50 yards, the shorter parallax just provides a small margin of error over the 100 yard parallax setting. The Leupold 1X4 shotgun scope is designed to be extremely rugged and is specifically recommended for heavy recoiling dangerous game rifles and slug guns. This provides me with an extra sense of security that the scope will hold up to anything I need it to. One final note, the scope you use is no better than the mount you use to attach it to your rifle. Do NOT try to save dollars on the scope mount. I use Armalite one-piece mounts. They are heavy, put your eye at perfect height to duplicate the level of A3 sights, and they are rugged. Do not buy flimsy cheap mounts & rings. Without the correct and permanent orientation of the scope to the axis of the bore, you will never get consistent results on the range. Good luck.

I have owned the burris and the millet sold them both. My friend has a Konus and he doesnt really like it.

Weaver Classic Extreme. Its a 1.5-4.5x though, not a true 1-4. I picked mine up from Natchez for the scope, Butler Creek covers and Burris 30mm XTR rings for $350 shipped.

Finally someone here who has this optic!  The more I look into it, the more I like it (especially for the price).  A few questions:

  • How is the reticle?  I havent seen an actual picture of it.  Is it just a blue dot in the middle of the cross-hairs?  How is the brightness/visibility in the daylight?

  • How close to 1x is it?  Is it easy to shoot both eyes open?

I also did the same EXCEPT, I had it with the custom reticle for my load. It ran $270 delivered. It zeroed at 200, and the reticle has bullet drop at 300, 400, and 500 when you zoom it to 4x. Search for my post here, its worth the read. For the price you are looking at, you can have the custom Leupold, a Larue mount, and some Magpul BUIS for your money.

Wow, Mike!  Great price on the Accupoint!  I've been considering one of these for a while but have not seen them priced so fairly.  Thanks for the info!

Trijicon's glass is amazing.  So is the Leupold!  Weaver Classic Extreme is an amazing optic, especially consider the sale that Natchez is having!

Ding Ding, we have a winner!!!

I have been going through this same dilemma and just pulled the trigger on the bushnell.  $317 shipped is a smoking deal!  It's going for about $150 more everywhere else I have looked.  If you are thinking about getting one I wouldnt wait, they only had 4 left in stock when I ordered mine.

Now onto the mount... the burris is looking good for $70.

I have one as well and recommend it.  That price is great!  Even if you don't like it you could always sell it on ebay for what you bought it for.

The reticle isn't bad. It is, as you said, a blue dot in the middle of the cross hairs. The illumination is not visible in bright sunlight.

It is pretty close to 1x but not quite there. Both eyes open works fine past 20 yards or so. Closer than that, and it seems hard to focus.
