Long story short, I basically want to make sure I'm not missing something.

Lowers that accept standard ak mags that are sold separately.

(the answer I came up w/ is none...   could this be?)

yup this guy ^

also the lowers and uppers from them ar only compatible with each other only sooo if ur going with a ak mag lower(or any swappable lower) have to use their upper to make them fit

thank you.  I seen that.  I was looking into a straight forward setup.  It appears things can become complicated w/ uppers with that setup.  I was looking into not removing metal or any funny business.  I'm beginning to see why this becomes interesting business w/ x39.

I gotta tell you guys something CMMG got so close w/ the mutant but several things about it just make me want to bang my head against a wall.  Would have loved to be a fly on the wall at the big meeting about some of the decisions on how to set up the rifle... .  They better stay on it and not give up and they better have their ears open to pee on's like us because IMHO they are winning but not by much for people who go out and actually use these things.

The rifle should not be over a grand.  I'll keep the rest to myself until I can actually play w/ it more, I have not had much time. I think everyone generally know the story by now anyway.

Thanks for your input.

any time I love the 7.62x39 round in a ar I went 16 inch rifle first then saw how much it loses in a short barrel and sold the long barrel and built a decked out ar firearm (Not a pistol since it is over 26 inches and allows a vertical foregrip) I love it built it for about 1500 with optics and mags and extra stuff that wasn't needed heres a break down. don't like the mutant because the gas blowback not piston

working mans armory billet upper and lower with a side charging non reciprocating left side charging handle
mega arms tactical adjustable trigger
Samson 10 inch keymod rail
syrac ordnance 18 position adjustable low profile piston kit
sd tactical suppressor ready muzzle break ( will be doing a form one can soon)
tactical ambush bolt and extended firing pin
primary arms advanced red dot and riser
kak extended sig brace tube and sig brace
taccom 1 oz buffer
taccom 10 percent less buffer spring
psa lower parts kit with ergo grip
c products mags that are great and work flawlessly
10.5 inch barrel 80 bucks or so nothing special like the kak barrels
and some other stuff im sure im forgetting but building without the special upper and the piston would make it under 800 since those combined ar 600 bucks

got to say though the piston makes it so much cleaner to shoot and is worth it but I wanted to make a modern ak the right way and man its a beast

The 7.62x39 AR upper with the std. lower & 7.62x39 AR mags is still the cheapest way to go, either sharing a lower with another caliber or building a complete rifle. Years ago my first 7.62x39 build took some modding of the mags & feed ramp to run reliably, but my new PSA AR-47 and  CPD mags has so far been 100% in it's first 1k rounds, so the 7.62x39 AR stuff has come a long ways.

Other non-AK rifles that take AK mags are the Sig 556R, the RRA LAR-47 and the PTR-32. I've had a PTR-32 for a while, a great rifle but does not work with all surplus steel mags, Sigs have had a history of similar issues.

Yes I ment to add that in my post to.. good catch.

I have a regular ar set up with the x39 bolt, barrel and mags. It works great and is really fun to shoot.

I want the mgi but to much $$$ for now

If it helps any, my brother used to have the MGI upper (no m4 feed ramps btw) and lower for use with AK mags.

He sold it in about 3-4 months. This was from coming from an AK.

It's hard to explain without pics, but the way the mag catch is designed, the metal sharp mag catch would cut into polymer mags after several mag changes. Steel mags were needed. After getting several steel mags, they were all too heavy and large for his tastes + he wanted LRBHO.

He built a 10.5" SBR on a standard lower and used 28 round mags by CPD now.

Just curious, does any of the platforms mentioned in this thread have LRHO with an AK mag?
Not referring to the mags with followers that will hold the bolt open when empty like the Yugos but a true LRHO feature that stays open while swapping mags.

I know my PTR-32 doesn't, don't think Sig 556Rs will either.

I swapped in an aftermarket BHO follower in one of my AK mags but it's kinda pointless since they release the bolt as soon as you remove the mag so it's not speeding up mag changes. Only use it for the public range I shoot at, when the range goes cold all rifles are required to be stowed in a rack/shelf behind the firing line with the action open & empty so the BHO mag is good for that.

Really like my 10.5 build with a cheap Anderson Lower and
ALG QMS Trigger set up.
Shoots great with CProduct and ASC 20 rounders and the 30 rounders work just as well.
Using a 3.5 oz buffer and just swapped the SIG brace for a Shockwave and KAK tube,
and like it better in the balance and feel.
No failures to feed or eject and cycles awesome.
Its got a Vortex Strikefire Red/Green dot and a Kineti-tech muzzle break / shroud, and is surprisingly accurate for a short barrel.
My 16 inch x39 was my first build in this caliber and with a decent optic is boringly accurate at a 100yds.
Cheap blaster with steel case low budget ammo. I might have to build another one in x39 as its just too much fun.

No, they don't.

Because it isn't a function of the AK pattern magazine.

The point of the BHO followers for AK magazines is not to speed up mag changes at all; it's to clearly indicate that you have an empty magazine without having to pull the trigger on an empty chamber.

Really the only way to even get it to work would require removing the stopper bumps from the inside of the magazine body so that the follower could rise fully, as well as (probably) making the cutout at the top of the AK mag somewhat deeper. This would at least let you use an AR-style BHO, but you'd still have to modify every magazine to work with it.
