We are really talking about 3 distinct Mini 14 designs. The original 180 series used a much lighter slide and a commensurately smaller gas block and smaller stock (top).  The 180 series stock is "lower" in the fore end, although they share the same liner.  The 180 series had distinctly different external bolt release.  2) The 181 through mid production 580 series (both Mini 14s and Mini 14 Ranch Rifles) all had the same skinny barrel, Ruger just retooled its worn out production tooling for the 580 series. 3) Mid 580 series Ruger added the heavier, tapered barrel and has continued that through the various 58x series. The present 58x stocks will still fit the older 181-580 series rifles. |

| I learned there were variations in receivers after I bought an E&L rigid brass catcher and it wouldn't clamp on my Ranch model. The old Mini lacked integral mounts and had a rear sight similar to the Garand/ M14. The Ranch had a fold down rear sight and integral mounts. |

OP, your Hogue stock does not have the internal metal stock reinforcement bracket, nor the screws and washers used to attach it to the wooden stock. Bracket and screws/washers can be either Stainless or blued. Pay attention on how the reinforcing bracket interfaces with the metal heat shield in fore-end of the rifle. Hopefully your replacement stock will have the "correct" internal stock reinforcement. There is a slight difference between the stock reinforcement for the Mini-14 and the Mini-30. Use the reinforcement intended for your rifle. Curved butt stocks older versions. Original butt plates were metal, and nowadays rare and expensive; Ruger switched to easily damaged/scratched plastic butt plate. Blued, serrated, curved metal butt plate: HERE Highly recommended as far more durable, and makes the muzzle feel a little more "lively". Stainless versions sell out quickly when they appear. Pro-tip: The top mounting screw for any of these butt plates can be replaced with a screw-threaded sling stud if a top-mounted (chest carry) sling is desired. Rig up something for the forward sling mounting point, and you're in business. |

The series is indicated by the first three digits in the serial number, 196 in this case. The integrated mounts for a scope make it a Mini 14 Ranch Rifle. The 196 series were all made with a 1-9" twist barrel, and just under 93,000 of them were produced from 2000-2003. |

Handguard wise there are pros and cons. The stock fiberglass handguard works fine and incorporates an aluminum heat sink and shield but it covers the slide so it is bulky and heavier than it needs to be. The original 180 (middle) hand guard was wood and I like both the aesthetics it and the slim profile, much like the very early M14 with a wood handguard. Heat wise a wood handguard is a mixed bag. It doesn't dissipate heat, but at reasonably slow rates of fire it's not an issue and with an optic it also helps reduce mirage effects. I use a non vented wood handguard on the 187 series Ranch rifle at the bottom for that reason. The composite Choate handguard is light, slim fitting and dissipates heat well, but lacks a heat shield, and is a bit on the fragile side. My preference is a vented aluminum alloy handguard (like the one on the series 184 Mini 14 at the top). It gives excellent heat dissipation, along with excellent strength.

To my recollection the 196 Ranch Rifles did not have threaded muzzles. It is possible someone threaded the barrel but some of the after market muzzle brakes were friction fit with set screws and Loctite. There used to be a catalog FirePower that sold a lot of Mini 14 parts back in the early 80’s. The muzzle brake pictured resembled some of the no name muzzle brakes sold in that catalog. Those were the days of Shotgun News, advertisements in gun magazines and random catalogs mailed by retail outlets. It may be an Allen head grub screw, whose top is sub-surface to the O.D. of the muzzle device. Tough to say whether Metric or Imperial, but certainly a small size, and likely some heat will be required to remove it. Make sure to heat it first and use proper size Allen Wrench. "Permanent Fix: Permanent seal prevents tampering and is only removable once cured by heating parts up to 500 F (260 C)". Suggest using a digital temp gauge from HF to avoid over-heating. |

I assumed the FSB is integral to the compensator. The muzzle brakes I saw were attached to the FSB, and require a roll pin removed. I installed an M-14 style flash hider to mine. It's a slip on. OP, strongly suggest you step away, consider above remarks, and approach the problem in a different manner. Use some HEAT to loosen/remove the roll pin and the grub screw and use a wooden block and hammer to tap off the muzzle device. Instead of hacking it up, sell it on EBay, and maybe make a few bucks. Muzzle device pictured is certainly a combo Front Sight/Compensator/and Brake. It's uncommon, and possibly someone is lusting for it. Your call. |

A single-strut Accu-Strut (as per Mfr's comments) may not make much difference in accuracy, compared to a dual-clamp version. Having a 186 "Pencil-Barrel" Mini, I installed a "dual-clamp, Drilled Accu-Strut", and it made a significant and positive difference in accuracy. Make sure to install as per Mfr's instructions, including "dimples" for the grub screws. |
