Any comments on these?  good bad?  i'd like to get my first FA and would like to be 5k and under.  I see mags are very expensive.  i do not want a mac.  if anything i'll save a few more $ and get an uzi.

The reising while not an attractive gun does quiet well in subgun competitions. Now that 30rnd magazines are available works well.

Magazines are not expensive compared to durring the 94AW ban, they are quite reasonable.

I've had mine for 10+ years. Its still my favorite subgun. Mags are currently running $125 for orig. 20 rounders. Ken Cristie?? has 30 round for $85?? Parts are not too bad to find,Gunparts Inc., make sure you buy a few extra firing pins.
For more info try machinegunbooks.com they have a pretty good Reising forum.

I will be the dissenting vote. A friend has one and constantly fights with broken firing pins. Mags are expensive and rarely work (this new 30rd might be the exception). I would invest the money in an Uzi, M2 Carbine, or another comparable MG in that $ range. There are far better and more attractive (as the Reising is ugly as hell!!!) MGs out there for the 1st time NFA buyer.

Reconsider a MAC. The M11/9 with a Lage slowfire upper would give you a potential match winner for under $4K:

I'd tend to agree. Of the machine guns i've fired, I disliked the Reising the most. We had a non-transferrable at the shop I used to work at, and we were constantly having to repair the firing pin as listed. It's also way faster than I like a subgun to be.

But, YMMV.

Got a Reising and love it -- beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I'm still a sucker for figured walnut and prewar blued steel. Mine has been 100% reliable, but because I want to keep it minty, it does not see as much use as my Uzi or M16.

There are a lot of trouble-prone Reisings out there -- but you need to remember that most transferable MGs today were built in the 1970s & '80s and have been civilian-owned since Day One. Reisings are 1940's-vintage SMGs, and most spent decades in military or LE service. They were hand-fitted when new, and a lot of armorers have swapped in replacement parts without bothering (or knowing how) to fit them properly. Once they are set up correctly, they will run fine forever, unless they have been so used and abused that everything is worn to the point where it's forever out of spec.

Because of their age and the fact that so many were abused, I wouldn't buy one without a close inspection and preferably a test-drive. OTOH, I bought my M11/9mm NIB, and it has yet to make it through a single range session without something breaking or falling off. Reminds me of a 1960s British sports car. I would hate to see how M11s are running when they are 65 years old, like my Reising.

Unless you like to tinker, I'd strongly recommend you pass on both the Reising and the Macs, and get an Uzi. They are, hands down, the most reliable, indestructible transferable SMG you can buy.

YMMV.

Thank you for all your input!!  I think i will hold out for an uzi.  I dont know but i guess beauty is in the eyes of the beholder because i think the reising is sexy .  It's no m16 or mp5 but i like wood stocks and not a lot of gizmos.

I think it is kinda funny, looking back to 1985, i was at a gun show here in PA and they had a whole table of full auto uzis.  I went and talked to the guy and almost bought one but decided i didn't need a full auto gun.  Back then i was more into bolt / hunting guns.  But as time went on, i started to see the fun in military style weapons.  If only i had that crystal ball because they are not getting any cheaper.

thanks again.

ETA Wow Tony that thing is sexy.  I cant tell from the glare but is that a PD marking on the butt stock?

The Marines hated the little Reising gun.  They loved the Thompson.  If you want a submachine gun that everyone knows and respects and you want a vintage WW2 gun, buy a Thompson.  They cost like rip, but they work and they awe everyone that sees them... even pictures of them.

WW2's submachine gun was the Thompson.

Yes, the thompson is sweet but it is 3 times the price of a reising.  if i win the lotery, i'd get an mp5, m16, uzi, reising, thompson, and a belt fed.

Yup. It was delivered to the Pittsburgh Police Department in late December 1941. That's the original Federal Labs hard case the Pittsburgh PD ordered with it.

I'm still trying to locate some PPD old-timers to see if anyone remembers it ... I bet it went out on some interesting calls over the decades, and I'd love to have more detail on its history.

Haven't we all at one time or another thought, "If this gun could only talk....."?

Yeah Tony, the one i was looking at was also a Pittsburgh PD gun.  It did not have the case and did not look quite as shiney as yours.

I am really on the fence here.  I really like it!!  It was just under 5k.  This would be my first FA purchase.  I do not really have any ranges around me that allow FA shooting, so I would only shoot it when i went up to the mountians.  I want to get into FA guns before they become too much more expensive.  I have about 5-6K burnnin a hole in my pocket and really like the "history" aspect of the reising i was looking at.  I am only concerend about the "Tinkering" aspect.  I have built ar-15, lowers / uppers, but do not know much about FA stuff.  I know i'll kick myself if i let this one get away and buy an uzi instead.  I wish my money tree was still producing those $50 bills but it is kinda bare now that my daughter is in college.

I've had an M50 Reising for many years and love it. It is a very reliable and accurate SMG. The best way I have found to describe a Reising is it is a great 45ACP carbine that happens to be able to fire full auto also. If you like classic weapons I'd say it is a no brainer, get it!
