I had H-110/WIN296 and Lil' Gun on my list of powders for the 110-grain v-max bullet and from my quick review of three load manuals, they both seem to be good candidates to push a 125-grain FMJ as well.

I had been using 4227 for years and it worked great in an AR but a bolt action brings a whole new world of possibilities for powder. I load to get right at 1000fps with subs and shooting them back to back my W231 load was significantly quieter than the 4227 which was already very quiet. This is my data for my particular gun, use at your own risk: 220gr Berry's 2.235" COAL W231 powder WSR primer 7.0gr - 1027fps 6.5gr - 968fps 6.0gr - 914fps 5.5gr - 870fps Scratch all that, don't use these loads, updated post below. Still trying to decide whether to go with a LPVO or a red dot, red dot cuts a full pound off the weight. Attached File Attached File |

When originally testing these loads I was primarily concerned with velocity and sound, which was great, I was hitting 1/2 size torso steel at 50 yards so I assumed accuracy was fine, it wasn't. Long story short, after some additional testing on paper with different bullet/powder combinations, the W231 was producing awful groups and actually causing the 220gr Berrys to come apart in my barrel/suppressor. Switching back to 4227 with 155gr, 208gr and the same 220gr bullets my groups shrunk back down and the 220gr stayed in one piece. |

View Quote Follow up: I am providing this info as I couldn't find a lot of N120/220grain 300BLK sub load discussion or data on the interwebs... Do your own load development, not responsible for you trying this but it worked for me/my gear. Loaded up some 300BLK subs using N120 powder in pre-primed converted LC brass. Bought the brass from a guy getting out of the game and given all his other primers were CCI and that he had a lot of CCI Small Rifle for sale, I am pretty sure these were CCI Small Rifle primers. But... I ran the cases through the resize die (sans decap rod) added measured powder charges and seated 220gr Berry's to 2.230” with a light crimp to remove bell from expander. Charges were 10.3 to 11.0 grains in 0.1 grain increments. The gun is an 8.3” BA pistol with a standard gas block and H3 buffer/standard carbine spring, suppressed. After a pistol match I set up and shot the 10.3 to 10.6 grain loads only stopping due to time limitations. They all functioned perfectly. Velocities were increasing (still sub) as they should but wanted to see what the 11.0 grain load would do so I ran that as well. It was still subsonic, clean, smooth functioning. Side note: Used a Garmin Xero C1 chronograph for the first time here and can say that having owned and used Chrony and MagnetoSpeed chronographs this thing is hands down, drop the mic, walk away fabulous. If you reload, shoot subs, shoot long range, shoot anything precision where you have to have good velocity data to hit first shot - Just get one. Now back to the loads. I am thinking that 10.3 is the load for me, 916fps average and 8fps SD. This load cycled smooth, held back on an empty mag, cycled rounds, it is clean, and it is the quietest as judged by the four folks present. All loads fired were quiet, clean, cycled with LRBHO, but this was cleanest, NO GAS, and grouped awesome without trying, and did I say - no gas to face? Sorry, after eating unburnt powder from suppressed sub and super ammo over the years I have a disdain for eye burning/grit in teeth gas to face... I will load some lower charge weights just to see where reliable function fails - so I know. I will also go a little higher to determine where it is no longer subsonic. Other loads - before the N120 loads I shot some of my 1680 loads. I may edit this to add the data that I don't have with me but they were sub, over 1000fps. This is a good load, it is quiet but side by side you can hear that N120 is quieter.... how much? I don't know. To be honest if sound is your biggest concern and not side by side with N120, I wouldn't worry about it IF you can deal with the filthy dirty chamber, barrel, suppressor, and face. Not kidding, you may chew some of it, I had soot all over cheek and nose. Maybe it needs Magnum SR primers to burn more complete/hotter/cleaner? You will also have to be able to withstand knowing that there is a superior powder out there that you could have bought that is MUCH cleaner and even quieter Nephew had bought a few cans of CFE BLK going into this 300BLK project with me so he is sticking with that powder. He ran about 20 rounds of one load, maybe 10.3 gr, otherwise same as my load. He had velocities under 1050fps, I cleared it from the Garmin thinking he had recorded it but.... maybe cell phone pic screen shots?? His loads ran great, quiet but noticeably louder, gassier. He may step the charge down to find where it will not function well but he is a busy young man. I am glad I got the 8# jug of N120 before the last price increase and if I find it on a deal I will buy more. |

Bought a Sig Rattler LT in 300 Blackout and did load development for it this week.
Worked up loads using the 110 VMAX and 110 Barnes Tac-TX. Barnes were seated to 2.250”, VMAX at 2.050” Used H110 and Lil Gun. Omitting Lil Gun results as they were trash. Brass was Starline using CCI 450’s. Read about Starline possibly having less case capacity so worked up loads at starting according to the load data, and stopped at 20.0 grains on H110. Best groups of the day were with 20.0gr of H110 with both bullets listed above. Chrono screenshots are labeled with velocity out of the 6.75” Rattler LT barrel. Testing was conducted when it was 97 degrees at 4,931 feet ASL. Attached File Attached File No pressure signs at all on brass or primers. Loaded 250 rounds of VMAX afterwards and went and did “live tissue testing” on jackrabbits last night. 110 VMAX performed VERY well. Rattler worked great getting in and out of the truck as well due to its size. |
