Tried some new cheapy ammo today and got a new malfunction.  It's a Remmington gold plated
hollowpoint that comes in 525 round boxes.  Cost was about $10 with tax on sale.  Firing the ammo felt like it had plenty of power.
The malfunction was the bolt stayed back.  It was not tripping my bolt hold open device either since working the bolt release did not move the bolt forward.  Seems like maybe there was enough power to
jam the recoil spring or something.  Recoil spring has never been replaced and I bought the gun used and could have fired 10k rounds.
I'm thinking I would not hurt anything getting a new spring and maybe a new bolt guide.  Maybe I should try a buffer?  Buffers might limit bolt travel but hopefully don't cause new problems?

Before you buy anything, take your 10/22 apart and look at everything.  Does anything look broken or out of place?  Are you missing any parts?

Try some better ammo too.  Alot of people have problems with cheap remington bulk.

A bolt buffer will not limit travel.  It's simply replacing a steel bolt-stop pin with a polymer one.  They are the same size.  The difference is that there is less "shock" to the reciever, takedown screw, optics screws, ect.  It wont solve your malfunction.

With your 10/22 apart, does the spring/guide rod have alot of tension?
If so, it's fine.  A new one will not fix your malfunction.

Finally, what mags were you using?

does the bolt move freely?
Is the gun  clean ?
is there any debris in the receiver ?

don't take offense as these are  dumb questions ,but I have seen a couple guns that got dirty to the point that the bolt would slow down and occasionally stick

also check to see if your scope base screws may be just a wee bit too long and dragging or holding the bolt ,

both of these items  may not be a issue with other ammo but if  the batch of rems you got may be a touch weak they could cause problems

EDIT cuz i can't spell
