I've had a stainless 10/22 for years that I'd never shot.  I recently took it out of the back of the safe and started taking it to the range to teach my girlfriend how to shoot.  The problem is that it can't even make it through a single magazine without having some sort of malfunction.  It mostly double feeds, but it has also had several failure to ejects.  This is has happened with a variety of ammo:  Winchester Wildcat, Winchester Xpert 22, Federal Game Shok, and Federal bulk pack.  The Wildcats were the worst.  I thought that  maybe the gun just needed to break in, but it's now got a few hundred rounds through it and has not gotten any better.  I'm hoping it is a magazine issue.  I've only got the one 10rd factory magazine that came with it.  I'm going to purchase and try another one.  If that doesn't work, anyone else have any suggestions?  I've always heard that 10/22s should be 100% out of the box.

10/22s can be finicky. Try a different mag for starters, also, try some CCI mini-mags. Expensive, but really works.

Break her in some more.

Give mini-mags a try.  They're usually good.

Most 10/22s do have preference in ammo, but yours seems particularly bad.  If I had that much trouble with a new one, I'd call Ruger.  Mine didn't start to get really picky until I put I-don't-know-how-many rounds through it without cleaning it.  I think I went three years between cleanings.

Double feeding is a magazine related problem that's all too common with factory 10rd mags.

Read and follow this and your magazine problems will go away.

Thanks for the advice all.  Yeah, everything has been cleaned and well lubed.  I just can't get a freakin 22lr that can make it through a magazine without jamming (having similar issues with another 22).  Does anyone have any experience dealing with Ruger about issues like this?  Despite the fact that the rifle has only had a handful of range trips, I've had it for about 5 or 6 years.  Also, I don't have any sort of proof of purchase anymore.  Would it be less of a pain to try to do some sort of reliability fixes on my own?

ETA:  Great link Osprey.  I'll give it a shot.

You can always send it to Ruger for service no matter if you're the original owner or not. Ruger knows it's their product and they're VERY good about servicing their products.  They've serviced several guns for me over the years, from an old beat to crap MKI pistol, to a AC556F machine gun. The fee, if any, will be minimal.

Give'm a call.

Another possibility is to get the AGI video on the 10/22.  The guy who appears is a bit funny, but the video shows all about tearing one down, cleaning, function, and fixes for common problems.  You may get more out of it than just fixing your double-feeds.

Clean the magazine or get a new one. While you're at it, buy & install a VQ extractor. That ought to fix it up.
