| I have a Simmons 3-9x scope that I had sitting around, so I threw it on top of the 10/22 pic. rail. I tried to get it on paper at 25 yards, but it seems that I'm "topping" the scope out. Do I need to shim it, or get higher scope mounts (I have some weavers on there now)? I believe they are the lowest possible because I had to fold down the back sight so that the scope doesn't hit it. Any ideas? |

Although it's possible, I doubt that your receiver is out of spec. I think it's much more likely that your problem is scope related. I'm not saying this to hurt your feelings but Simmons optics are junk. Pure and simple. Yeah, I knew this, but I had it around, so I threw it on the rifle. I was planning on getting a different scope for it before I did anything. Any recommendations? |

This is a common issue with 10/22s. Two things can cause this. One is receiver hump. Remove the scope rail and lay a straight edge (a steel rule works well) along the rail mounting holes. If you see daylight between the front & rear of the receiver you have the hump. The other issue is barrel droop. That's caused by a sloppy fit between the barrel and receiver. The "V" block that holds the barrel to the action tends to pull the barrel down. A lot of guns have both & you'll run out of "up" before you get sighted in. Possible solutions are shimming the rear of the rail, shimming the rear ring, buying a scope base with built in elevation, & using a "V" block that has a set screw. See the links below.
