[ARCHIVED THREAD] - 12GA 00 Buck Questions

Went to a local gun shop where they usually carry Hornady Tap 00 Buckshot but were all out. So I picked up some Federal Tactical 00 Buckshot. My question is, I know Hornady Tap is the bee's knees for personal defense ammo, but when we are talking 12GA ammo, am I going to be seeing a lot of difference between the different ammo?

If you got the "flite control" stuff expect it to pattern much differently - probably tighter.

Didn't see anything about "Flite Control" on the box. Just said Tactical 12GA 00 Buck. It was the only thing they had on the shelf and figured it was better than the 8 Shot bird shot I have now.

You will see almost no difference at 'across the room' distance in patterns nor in on-target effectiveness. Take it to 15 yards and out and you may, but the Federal Tactical is good stuff and usually holds relatively tight patterns itself.

The pellets in the Federal load actually all separate from the wad, unlike the Hornady load.

I got a case of the Hornady and have that problem. I only buy federal now.

ETA: I guess if I would have read all of the replies I would have noticed that it appears to NOT be a good thing

Generally a negative thing as it makes an already random event (the pattern) inconsistent and unpredictable.
