| I have a CMP Springfield 1903 Mark 1 (basically an original 03' NOT an A3). I need a good smith who won't charge an arm and a leg for a new barrel install. Also where can I go for a new or NOS barrel. I've seen plenty of new production 03'A3 barrels, but will they fit an original 1903? |

My current Gun Parts Inc catalog lists a new made military style 4 groove barrel that will work on the 1903 or the 03A3
Item # 809930 $200.00 A new rear sight collar is also listed and you may as well get one since getting the old collars off the barrel can be a pain. Item # 809940 $40.00 |

PLEASE educate me, not a big 1903 guy, but always wanting to learn something new |
| The 03-A3 barrel will screw onto the 03 action just fine, however it will need to be modified so that the rear sight sleeve will fit and the front sight base will need to be exchanged for the 03 base also. The modification will require machine work to reduce the size of the rear of the barrel to get the sight sleeve to fit. |

That is why Gun Parts sells the new sight ring I believe, it will fit their barrel with minimal work and you can use the 03A3 front sight band to regulate the sights. Gun Parts replacement stuff isn't "all correct" but it is designed to get a weapon back in shooting condition with minimal fuss.HTH |

PLEASE educate me, not a big 1903 guy, but always wanting to learn something new IIRC no 03 barrels were 2 groove, 03A3 barrels, however, were either 4 or 2 if original, the majority of replacement barrels were 2groove, the 2 groove thing was a mid to late war effort, (some Enfield No 4's also had 2 groove barrels) i would need to dig out Brophy's book to see if he has any definite #'s listed, |

Thanks for answering my question. Looks like I need a 1903 barrel not one for an A3, I thought they might be different since the sights on the older model mounts directly onto the barrel instead of the receiver. Anyone know of a forum for 1903s specifically? I also do understand I will ruin the collector value if I replace parts, but I shoot all of my guns, No safe queens here. The barrel is worn and it needs a new one, NOS or new production, whatever shoots. The CMP guns were old VFW drill/parade rifle turn ins and they aren't in the greatest of shape. My M1 carbine from the CMP was in a hell of a lot better condition. I would be interested if someone could point me in the direction of a gunsmith who works w/ these guns on a regular basis and doesn't charge out the yin yang. |

These are rare. The majority of No. 4s have 2-groove barrels, though there are lots of variations in No. 4 barrels. -Mark |

CMP has some new Criterion '03 Barrels available that are CMP legal for Service Rifle Competition.
I tried asking how they were working out and I got 1 negative reply and nothing else. It's basically a button rifled Criterion and their Garand Barrels have gotten good reviews. It's affordable but they may still be crapshoots....and I believe they may need finish-reaming and a headspace check so I don't think it's a DIY project. Anyone have any experience with them....good or bad? |
