A very good friend of mine recently bought the above, along with 3 mags (1 GI, 1 no-name, 1 with buffer attached), pistol rug, GI rod and brush, and old box of GI ball.

S/N indicates the pistol was mfd between 1915-1918, and it is marked "Colt" and "U.S. Property in the usual places.  Nice wood grips of the GI pattern, with another spare set.

Pistol has been refinished (deep blue), with some of the lettering on the sides of the slide made either illegible, faint, or some unaffected.   Finish is near-new, with some finish wear visible on the portion of the barrel visible throubh the ejection port.

Barrel and barrel bushing are numbered, and marked "NM".

Rear sight is adjustable and is similar to a BoMar, but by a Mfr whose name I can't ever recall seeing.  Front sight is a very tall serrated blade.  As-is, I doubt it would fit into a GI leather holster without tearing up both the holster and ruining the finish on the FS in short order. Don't recall if FS is staked or dovetailed.

The slide-to-frame fit is pretty tight.  Bore pristine.  Trigger pull is Match grade.  No visible external mods save sights.  Arched mainspring housing with lanyard loop.

Story is that this was a competition hardball-style pistol passed from GI to GI over the years, with a number of pistolsmiths tweaking it to within an inch of its life. Last owner says he left the Army with it and hasn't shot in decades.  He's credible, IMHO.

I've looked around the usual sites, and can't seem to find anything exactly like it.  Obviously, it's not original, as parts substitution, modifications, and refinishing have altered it.

Question is, what's the thing worth?  Anybody care to give a range?

Purchase price was an FTF $350, with seller knowing full well that it was worth much more.

Refinished and altered sights, and non original barrel significantly reduces its` value. Your friend pretty much has a shooter with an interesting history. I`m not an expert, but I would suspect it`s worth south of a thousand. YMMV.

I think you raise some valid points.  Still, and no offense, I'd like to hear some other opinions.

just going by similar pistols i have observed for sale at shows (and that sold),  $650 +/- on the east coast, at least in VA,
some higher, some lower, depending on, well, everything,

the fact that you say the markings are faint, as in polished off when reblued, may make that price lower, (harder to restore if desired)

and definately try 1911.org,,

$600.00-$700.00 is probably the going price if it works OK, even the reblue and non original parts won't detract someone who wants a reasonably priced "GI" 1911.
