HI fellow reloaders,
I have been reloading pistol/shotgun for over 20 years.  New to rifle reloading.  My AR Barrel is Daniel Defense Barrel AR-15 5.56x45mm NATO S2W Contour Mid-Length Gas Port 1 in 7" Twist 18" Hammer Forged Nitride Finished Chrome Moly Black.   Load workups were with Varget and TAC.  Rifle powders are hard to come by, should count my lucky stars i have those two.   Any way my Load work up was 25 to 27 gr varget  by .5 increments.   Bullet was Xtreme 55 grain fmj.   I found the best accuracy in the 25.5 gr and 26 gr loads of varget.     Second load was with tac.  I like TAC.  i loaded from 21.6 gr to 23.6 gr in .5 grain increments with theXtreme 55 grain fmj.   Best accuracy in the group was at the 21.6 loading and the 23.1 loading.

edited to add I am using CCI 41 primers for everything.

Couple of Questions,
Is this accuracy with Varget consistant with other peoples findings for a 18" 1 in 7 twist barrel?
The strange thing with the Tac was that the gun liked the 21.6 loading and the 23.1 loading even better.  Is it common to have 2 different charge weights of the same powder a couple of grains off doing the best in your rifle?
Am i obsessing?

Varget (extruded) gives good accuracy with any brand/length/twist barrel.

The down side is the poor metering, so I quit using it a long time ago.

There are several powders that measure very well (like Tac which is a ball powder) so you don't have to put up with Varget.

With FMJ bullets, unless you are using the best (Hornady 55 gr FMJBT) don't bother with groups.

It's possible to find a low charge and a higher charge accuracy node. Read up on barrel vibration and how it affects accuracy.

I use these powders for precession loads in 223, Re-15, IMR-8208 XBR (both short cut extruded that measure well).

CFE 223 (ball powder) is my favorite.

The TAC was awesome for loading.  When i got to 27 gr Varget, I dont think i could fit anymore in the case.  I will definately buy more TAC when  i see it.  I have some AR Comp that I was holding on to to try with heavier weight bullets.  If i go on a accuracy quest, what weight bullet should i be using for a 1:7 twist bullet.

I've found 24 grains of TAC plus a 55 grain bullet = accurate loads in all my 223 rifles.

Ok, so with varget and your barrel twist I personally would shoot a heavier gr bullet like nosler 69, or 77 gr thats what I use. Varget is a slow burning powder that works well with hevier gr bullets. You should be really impressed  with the results even out at longer ranges.

I've found two accurate loads when doing a work up quite a few times.
If the speed of the lower is decent I'll pick the one that seems to a wider range of powder weight needed.
To me varget starts to work well with the 69smk and heavier.

I would use the AR comp for any bullet weight, Varget for the heavies.

AR Comp will measure almost as good as ball powder (Tac).

A drop tube is normally used when working with Varget and many other extruded powders.

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/554122/frankford-arsenal-powder-funnel-with-16-nozzles-and-4-drop-tube?cm_vc=ProductFinding I use the one in this kit. There are many different ones out there.

Heavy bullets, the various 75-77 grs from Hornady, Sierra and Nosler.

Note: 75 gr Hornady A-Max cannot be loaded to mag length.
