I have a tac 65 on its way and was told that I could not get it threaded.

was told that i would need to have the bbl trimed then threaded which would leave no room for the front sight.

anyone else have this problem?

this will be my first NFA item. I have no experience with silencers.

Who told you this? A local smith?

A new front sight hole needs to be drilled and tapped, but it's simple for a competent smith to do.

ETA long is your barrel?

The front sight would have to me moved back if you wanted to keep it. My guess is this was beyond the skill (or desire) of the person you talked to.

It CAN be done. You just have to have a good machinist to get it done right.

I see many going with a Tac Sol upper...

SRT Arms threaded my barrel and moved my front sight back. Includes a thread protector. Less $$ than a Tactical Solutions upper.

Mark at TROS cut and threaded my Government Target Bull. The cut portion was turned into a thread protector. The front sight was moved back as well.

Marty @ Teppo Jutsu just threaded both my Ruger MKII and 22/45 and moved back the front sight blade by drilling and tapping a new hole.

I threaded a Browning Buckmark camper and was able to do it without moving the front sight, just trimmed the front of the sight back.

I did this with my Buckmark as well with great results.

sorry in my hast I failed to mention it is a 4 inch barrel.

the lack of room for the front sight was the problem.

I didn't know that it would have to be cut shorterbefore threading.

how much did you guys have trimed off?

The barrel does not have to be shortened to thread, diameter of end of barrel reduced to .5" then threaded, front sight gets in the way.

You can have a phantom thread cut into the end of the barrel, it will be expensive.

If the smith you are having thread the barrel cannot figure out how to remount the front sight then I would not trust them to thread the barrel either. Even if slight modification has to be done to the sight to make it fit, it should be a simple job for any competent smith.

Find a different gunsmith.  Moving the front sight back is easily done.

Here's a before/after.  I went from 5.5" to 4".

Actually this is who I asked
Sean,

Sorry to take so long to reply. My internet has been down the last few days.
I think you mean Tactical Innovations. TAC65

The problem with the 4" barrel 22/45's is it doesn't leave me enough
room to work with. The front of the barrel needs to be trimmed else the
threads will go right through where the old front sight screw hole is.
The 4" barrel doesn't give you enough length to do this. I need to start
with the 5.5" barrel Ruger. Cheers.

Mike

Actually it was you pic of the 22/45 threaded that got me to thinking I need a suppressor. I did not know you started with the 5.5 inch barrel.

the NFA dealer tells me not to worry he'll talk to Mike and if he can't do it he knows a couple of other smiths that will do it they are just a little farther away.
