Can anyone recommend a decent quality .22 rifle that would fit a 5'2" female. My wife's been shooting my old Marlin 60 lately and would like something a little shorter and lighter. An autoloader preferably.  What do you think of the Ruger 10/22DSP.  Any other suggestions.  Thanks as always.

I'd also like to get her a decent scope.  Are there any that are easier to get a full sight picture than others?

Not familiar with the "DSP", but the Ruger 10/22 is one hell of a rifle.  I'm the oldest, and Dad bought me a Marlin Model 60.  All my younger brothers got a 10/22.

Buy the 10/22.

They also have a youth stock that they sell in Brownelles for the ruger 10/22.  Just in case you needed a shorter length of pull. HTH

I haven't heard of the -dsp, but the 10/22 is a fine rifle, and you can 'race' the thing in any direction you want.

Gotta be the 10/22.

My 4"9' wife loves mine. She also enjoys my Feather AT-22 but they're hard to find any more.

Get the Ruger. I had a 10/22 for a few years and loved it. I traided that for a little bolt gun. ouch. I recently got a remington 597 Heavy barrel with a laminate stock, its pretty, and accurate but terrible. I can do nothing to it, not even get a bigger mag, and it jams all the time.

Definately get a 10/22 for her.  They are accurate and durable.  I have a 10/22, MKII and plan on buying a 77/22.

the DSP has sling swivels.  the others don't that's the only real difference i can tell.

Got a 597 as well. Put 500rounds thru it every weekend and get about 10 failure to feed issues. I bought 2 new mags and put in a match hammer. Made the diff for me.. Its a nice plinker for the $99 bucks I paid for it. My neighbor puts 500 rounds thru his 10/22 and it rarely  jams...$225 new...nice plinker if you want to modify later on.

The DSP 'Deluxe Sporter' has a checkered walnut stock and sling swivels as opposed to the plain hardwood stock.

How about measuring her trigger pull and then take the stock to a qualified gunsmith or wood shop/cabinet maker and having it cut down to her exact measurements, she would have the best fit possible and probably cheaper too.

I would recommend the Browning Buckmark. It is a small rifle. It has a great feel. It will out shoot my Ruger 1022 that cost me about a $1000.00 to build. It now collects dust.

Another vote for the 10/22

Another vote for the 10/22.  Just can't beat the accuracy/reliability.

The only question would be does she wan't something lighter.  You should take around and let her try out several.

It may shoot good, but that sure is an ugly rifle.

Looks like the 10/22 is the overwhelming choice.  What is available for magazines? Are there any 10+ mags available for them?

are there any 10+ round mags for the 10/22?, geez you crack me up sometimes. of course there are, I have a 50rd and 4 25rd mags the butler creek 25rds have a really good reputation and the 50rd ramline has worked flawlessly also. I don't think my 10/22 has ever jammed in my hands, typical ruger, cheap, effective and super reliable.

but do you really want your wife to defend herself with such a puny round, heres a reccomendation get her a mini 14 by some 10rd mags by promag really hi quality and load it up with some M193 ball the 223 packs a nasty punch but don't recoil very much, it is loud but I would rather have loud and alive then dead and quiet.

1911greg

She's just now starting to get into shooting. She's already fired one of my AR-15's, my 357sig P229 and the .22 She likes the .22 best and is still a little intimidated by the louder stuff.
Oh, and BTW once she's more familiar and confident, she'll be using the old 12ga for defense.

You crack me up.

Ruger's 10/22 should work just fine.

The Ruger 10/22 would be a good choice with a couple of aftermarket parts:

The easy release magazine 'switch'.
The last shot bolt-hold-open part.

I can't be more specific, sorry.
There's so many parts for these guns it's amazing.

Regarding the Remington 597:
It can be problematic, alright.
I just installed the new style ejector and got the new style metal mags for it.
I still need to take it out to test it with the new parts, which are supposed to fix the jamming problems experienced with the earlier models.
The 597 is a full size .22 rifle with a refined design --- only it has had a few problems that have hopefully been worked out.  We'll see.

Good Luck.
