I am thinking of getting a 308 semi auto. I want something I can put a scope on, something I can hunt deer out to 100yards with accurately, and something that will not break the bank. I have about $700-$1100 to spend. I have been looking at -Saiga 308 $550ish -FAL from Atlantic Firearms for $896 -M1A for $1300 Ill have to save more $ up for it. -JLD PTR 91 for $1050 but it seems hard to scope -AR10 DPMS for about $1050ish. All opinions of how these might suit, or if I’m too high on my guess on price, are appreciated. |

The saiga would be the last choice out of that list. If it was me: 1. Ar10- no would to expand in bad weather. easy to find parts and excessories 2. M1A- same reasons as above. you would proubly have to use a scout scope mount. 3. ptr91- uses a HK claw scope mount that is expensive and hard to find btw. 4. FAL |

I use a HK91 for deer hunting so I will say the PTR The FAL and AR10 make for great deer rifles too. My Dad hunts with a 16" DSA FAL and my fiend uses a DPMS AR10 and my Uncle's hunting buddy has a Armalite 16" AR10. I have deer hunted with a M1A before and I thought it sucked. I hated how long the rifle was, and the lack of a cheek rest. It just sits in my safe...don't think I will ever take it hunting again. |
| I'd choose the Saiga with a POSP scope. It's lightest and most reliable on the list, and as accurate as the rest save the DPMS. The DPMS would be my second choice, in a lighter weight barrel profile. The PTR is a pig, the M1A is overpriced and a PITA to scope, and the FAL, while very good, will be more expensive to scope and heavier than the Saiga with no real benefit other than ergonomics of left-side charging handle and thumb operated safety. |
