Curious if anyone has any experience with this. Loaded up some .30 speer 130gr HP over 50 gr of varget. I had the bullets left over so I thought id give It a try. These will be shot in a garand.

which book are you getting your load out. For some reason it seems high for a garand load

I got it off hodgons website. Wanted to post it here before I shot it in my garand to see if it was a ok load for it. It would be used mostly for hunting.

Just looked on their website and its start is 49 grs. I would for sure stay on the low end. Maybe a grain or 2 lower than that but I have never worked With varget in a .30-06. The last thing you want is a filled case in a Garand.

I know may not be the best help but I cannot find any of my Garand load data

Looking in Hornady #9, the M1 section doesn't list anything lower than a 150gr bullet.

However, for the 150gr bullet, they list a start charge of 42.3gr of Varget @ 2400 fps and a max load of 46.2gr of Varget @ 2600 fps.

I'm not sure that the data listed on Hodgdon's site is garand-safe data.  Perhaps someone else can confirm or deny this suspicion.

My recent experience with Hodgdon's data is that the best loads are at the top end...I mean the very top.

This is with multiple powders, calibers and loadings.  Start at the medium and don't be afraid to go to the max loading.  just watch for pressure signs.

Good luck!

I would not shoot that in a garand just for the 135gr bullet. You need to be in the 150-168 range. Powder charge also seems excessive. This is just opinion and not fact.

This has been my experience with most data since 1985 but with bolt action hunting rifles.

I don't think it is good advice for a M1 Garand though.

Thanks for the replies guys I think ill abandon this load. Not worth the risk for a relatively small number of bullets I have.
