Lead is my first choice because they are the most accurate bullets. Look at all the bullseye records. How many use jacketed bullets. And they are not that dirty to handle...the dry lubed 38 wadcutters are nasty, but regular cast are not too bad.
Bullseye powder will get you the best accuracy in 38 Special lead. If you want to go with jacketed, the XTP is one of the finest bullets made. I find that 231/HP38 or Titegroup in the 38 Special with jacketed is accurate, Bullseye also. The use of magnum primers is called for in the H110/296 loads because the high charge weight....lots of powder to light up at once! H110/296 max power loads are famous for gas cutting the top strap above the forcing cone. AA#9 is less hot and you can get about the same velocities. Follow the manuals and you will be alright. The previous advice about crimping plated bullets is on point. Also good advice for lead bullets. Take your time...and do a LOT of research! The Lyman manual data has been spot on for me for many, many years. My first manual back in 1987, and my go to now. If you are going to use the XTP bullet, get the Hornady manual also. You can never have too many manuals! Good luck! |

I picked up my first wheel gun a few months ago and what a blast it is to shoot.
ive bought a few hundred rounds of factory ammo of different sorts to see what cases fit my moonclips the best since I may shoot it in USPSA the federal cases seem to fit the best but the accuracy of the 158 grain LRN federal factory ammo SUCKS!! my handloads with bullseye and 158gr plated bullets is excellent though |

And you can never have enough 38 Spcl rounds loaded. A very accurate, versatile, forgiving cartridge. It's my favorite round to reload and shoot. Not sure I would say "forgiving"... easy to double charge. If you use a Dillon fail-safe powder measure and the powder check die, they are impossible to double charge. |
