Current build: AR15 platform (DDLES lower) 9mm SBR 5 in. barrel w/suppressor.

If you were building from scratch, would you use a 3 lug barrel or thread on barrel and why?  I will be using either an AAC TiRant 9 (thread on) or Evo 9 (3 lug barrel).  The Evo 9 will need the TRIAD 3 lug adapter.

The suppressor will only be used on the SBR and pretty much on there permanently, besides removing for cleaning and maintenance.  The 5 in. barrel will be housed inside a 7 or 9 in. FF rail system.  I want the most secure method of suppressor installation and the easiest removing.

Reading all of the above which route would you go with?

After using a TROS 5" three lug barrel for many years, in conjunction with a SWR Trident 9, I made the switch to a threaded barrel.

My reason for switching was due to the maintenance on the SWR three lug mount. If you don't keep extremely clean and lubed, the tensioning piston in the mount would stick upon removal, thus when trying to re-attach the slightly "dirty" Trident 9, the spring wouldn't have strength to lock the piston on the muzzle. This became too much of a hassle for me.

I currently run a 7" threaded barrel that I bought from ADCO and use the 1/2x28 thread adapter on my Trident 9.

This is what it looks like now with a new 11" Samson Evo forearm.

Very nice.  Thanks for the response.  How do you keep it from coming unthreaded?  Is the suppressor primarily used on this wepaon?  Would you use, say Red Loctite to keep it secured?

If you're having trouble with your can unscrewing, a little Teflon thread tape will cure this. Plus, it's easy to remove if you want to.

I'm curious of the same thing, my RRA 9mm should be here any day andf I don't know what to do.  I figured the screw on would be a pain in the rear with possibly messing the threads up from trying to align it inside of the rails.  I just assumed I would get the barrell cut by adco and have them place the 3 llug adapter on the barrel but I didn't think on how to clean the 3 lug adapter part.  Anyhow I'll start a new thread so I don't hijack this one.

Teflon tape.

In the past I would run my Trident 9 on my Glock17, but very rarely.

Now the Trident lives on my 9mm SBR 100% of the time.

i like thread on, i use an adco 1/2x36 barrel and tirant 9 under a yhm rail. i use teflon tape works great. the tirant stays on the AR 100%.

do you have to remove the rail to get at the threads with the teflon tape?

I use 3 lug, but I don't have an RR or LL.  Hasn't given me any issues.  Use a YHM 9MMXL & Gemtech Multimount both with 3 lug.

I will be the dissenting opinion.  I prefer 3-lug mounts on carbines.  The cleaning was never an issue for me and was a minor inconvenience in trade for a more secure mount that I didn't have to worry about periodically checking.

Like most things in the firearm world, much of this boils down to user preference.

However, I will say I personally would never use any interface mounted under a rail unless part of the rail easily removed for cleaning the host interface.  But that's just me.

I went with the 3-lug for my 10.5" RRA 9mm upper, and don't regret it.

to first put it on yes. but it stays on even after you remove it a couple times. i use the new tirant takedown tool to help screw it on tighter than a strap wrench.

Who makes a 3 lug 9mm AR barrel? Does TROS still make one?

Yep, but last I heard, and it has been a while, the lead time is a little long.
