Does anyone make good 40rd mags for a M1A1?

No.....Might be a little long though. IIRC there are some extended mags that were made up from welding two GI 20rd bodies together, I don't know if they held 40 but probably less. There is also some evidence that a 75rd drum was produced in a very small quantity pre 1994, a modified MG15 drum was mated to a feed tower that would fit into an M14.

I don't think so, but can you imagine how long it would be and how heavy that mother would be after sticking 40 rounds in it.  The new 25 rounders pretty much kill any prone shooting you might do.

No thanks.

There are 30's... not the crappy blued pieces of junk that you find at the funshows, but somebody was making GI spec 30rd bodies with welded on rear lug/tab, parked, with a powerful spring to boot. Silly me, I only bought one of these things... works great! It may be a tad long and somewhat heavy, but for rapid fire she's a doozy.

I think gunbroker, or auction arms, but caveat emptor or whatever... there was only one guy selling them at the time and now there's a mass of 'em. For the record mine is a very light gray park, a shade or two lighter than early Colt AR15 park. His add, if he's still around, shows a picture of the rear lug which is almost identical to USGI (size wise it's dead on). I'll get a pic up soon of this thing when I find it amongst me mess. Here we go...

side by side: 30rd & BRWs1 20rd.

Before you consider buying one, think about whether it can be used in the USMC sniper scout prone position or any other prone position.

Thanks for the info!! looks great!

No it is not to be used in the prone position, but was that not why the M1 Grannd did not use a box mag. everyone knew it was useless.
