| Just picked up a Ruger 1911! What do you guys like to load up for range days? Powder\bullet type? |
|
My SR1911 will eat anything round-nosed, but it doesn't like the flat nosed stuff. I'm still fiddling with those however.
Right out of the box, the recoil spring is stout; unless you want to swap it out for a lighter spring, it may not want to cycle reduced power loads. 200 grain round nosed (plated) over 6.3 grains Universal Clays, 6.5 grains Unique, or 7.0 grains Auto Comp. These aren't 'light', but they're not screamin' hot either. Cartridge overall length 2.250" 230 grain FMJ, 6.0 grains Universal Clays, 2.260" COL. Although not quite book 'max', those deliver a very gratifying thud As always, start low and work your way up. |
| The original 230 gr FMJ factory load was 5 gr of Bullseye and it works real well for me. 4.5 gr of Bullseye with the 230 gr LRN works well. Around 5 gr of W 231 with the 200 LSWC is a good load. W 231 also works well with the other bullets. Titegroup can work well with .45 ACP. I don't use it very often so don' t have any loads in my head, but the 185 JHP can be an extremely accurate bullet in this caliber. Check any load against published data. |

Yes it does. Works great with the LRN bullets I picked up from RMR. Quoted:

I too use W-231. Five grains pushes a 230 real nice. Yes it does. Works great with the LRN bullets I picked up from RMR. This. Except I use HP38, which is the same as W231 but cheaper! |

For those using WST would you mind posting some loadings you have done? I have a pound of it and would like to work up some plated 230 grain loads. Thanks! Thurman I haven't loaded 230gr yet, but I do load a lot using a 200gr lead semi-wadcutter. My load is a 200gr LSWC over 4.5gr of WST. It is accurate in all of my 1911s and I have several friends who use the same load in theirs. It seems to be a very accurate consistant load in about all 1911s. |

Thurman I worked up to just under max with 230gr FMJ. It's still pretty gentle that way... good enough that I was able to win my division in the last GSSF match with it. |

You Sir have picked one of the best pistols and caliber for reloading My favorite is 4.8 of 231 for target and 200 SWC cast boolits (people who shoot Cast like to call then that !!) Now you have to get some reloading manuels,I like Lyman.Speer (cheapest) and Hornady. Start with min listed loads and work up to see what your pistol likes. This is a very light load that my 12 year old shoots like a champ. You can also consider plated bullets like Berrys,Rainer,Extreme You can shoot a little cleaner and faster with plated (Al Gore told me it's better for the enviorment )

Thurman WST and 231 in most respect "mirror" each other.. work around with 231 data, and put them over a chrono.. I think the lead loads I make using RCBS 201 SWC and 230 RN molds, with bearing surface being idential, I load same either bullet. I think my stash is at 5gr WST and chrono 950 FPS from 10 1/4" Uzi barrel in 45acp (Genuine IMI 45acp with 6 groove LH twist) |
