I have a bowling ball I want to turn into a spotting scope mount.
http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?132201-Infinitely-Adjustable-Spotting-Scope-Mount I thought it would be easier for my kids to use the spotting scope then. Maybe on my vacation I should just shoot the bowling ball and see what happens. Ill bet mine won't explode. |

At the Marksville Fun Shoot a couple of years ago, I chased a bowling ball back and forth at 1000 yards. If you don't hit it near the center, it will deflect the bullet and roll the ball across the ground. I chased one ball back and forth about 6 feet before I finally busted it. To bust it I had switched to my FCSA Match loadings, which are much more consistent at that range. Then I switched to a mile. I wasted more ammo than I want to talk about before busting one of a cluster of four. At 456 and at 600 yards, they were much easier to break.
It was a great time - thank you Barry and David for the invite. I need to renew my SCSA membership, and plan another trip down. Maybe next year as my son will be finishing up his 5th year at Texas A&M in Aerospace Engineering, and my daughter will be at Rice University in Houston working on her PHD in BioMedical Engineering. Sure is a long way from upper Wisconsin though !!! |

Can't you skip bullets over the backstop if you are shooting at the ground? I know this doesn't apply to every range, but something to think about. Rob, at the Fun Shoot Oldman is talking about there is approximately 8 12 miles of wooded private land downrange. It's been thoroughly mapped and designed for long range .50 shooting. |

We've shot a lot of bowling balls with 50s and they're all different. Some of them explode, while some take hit after hit. That's been my experience as well - and I used to buy them frequently at a thrift-shop for a dollar a piece. The first one I ever shot lasted an entire afternoon of hits of .45acp. Having gotten a bit bored, I decided to tag it with my mini-14 (yes - .223) and the ball blew up like there was an explosive inside. A small piece (with the bullet's pucker-hole) about the size of a .50-cent piece flew straight back and hit me in the chest. I still have that piece somewhere floating around in a junk drawer.. |
