Well.. I finally remembered where I had left my camera, so here are some current pics of my 556/551 project gun.

Believe it or not ALL the furniture AND the SwissArms 551 lower was originally GREEN. I like BLACK, so I did my Thermal Dye Sub routine to the furniture and sent the lower out to Top Gun Enterprises for their Stealth Tec Polymer based self lubricating Black Finish. It took Top Gun about two weeks (round trip) to do the lower. I REALLY like this finish and have had it put on every one of my projects that require any refinishing work!

I think it's pretty much done. I MAY chop the barrel down to 14.5", then SS the FH on to the end (16" OAL) to more closely resemble the 551 SWAT.

HERE is the look I was going for (SwissArms Latest version of the SG551):

Here are a few pics of MY gun (Click on any image for a LARGER representation):

I found a 550 receiver butt with a complete rear site, a couple months ago in a "junk box" I had.  I WAS going to add a rear site to the mix, but I like the aimpoint so much, now, that I think I'll just sell the butt/site and forego any irons!

Sweet! Looks good. Looks real good.
So the 551 lower mates with the 556 upper with no modification?

Of course, if you do more with your 556 than just pose with, take/stare at pictures of it.. God Forbid.. actually SHOOT it, then you may wish to use the Factory 556 Forearm.

After 100 rounds, or so, the 551 forearm simply DOES NOT insulate your hands well enough to protect you from the barrel heat.

The 556 Forearm , IMHO is MUCH superior in this aspect,  and will allow you much longer range sessions with this particular toy! :)

Look everyone, its the product SIG should have sold from the get go!

Your project turned out nicely.
What did the whole thing set you back?

Well.. The lower was one I had left from all the 551 kits I sold a couple years back.
I spent $150 to refinish it with Top Gun. I paid about $1200 for the 556.

So.. total cost to me was about $1350.00!  :)

Nice. Throw on a B&T rail system, chop the barrel to 14.5" with a perm'd Vortex, and put the 550 cheek piece on it and I'd be all over it. I'd still like it to use AR mags though. Some smoke PMAG's would still have as much cool factor as the 550 mags but cost a lot less.

Very nice improvements though.
