I'm looking at the 556's and notice there are two different lower receivers available. One version has ribs up front near the pivot pin. The other doesn't. Why does SIG have two versions?

Basically, a lot of people complained that the original 556 (With those receiver ribs, M4 style stocks, and "Fishgill" handguards) didn't look like the original 551 clone they were expecting.

Ahhh. And I thought is was for some type of reinforcement.

Personally I do think the version with the M4 stock and fish gill hand guard is a better looking weapon.

And can readily accept M4-type accessories.

You need an adapter to get the stock to fold, though.

The Classic style lower gives the best of both worlds as it satisfies those that prefer the original Swiss folding stock and for those that prefer an M4 stock you can get an adapter from DDLES (and others as well).   Many people urged Sig to go with the Classic style lower before they ever released the 556 as the M4 stock adapters have been around for many years for the 550 series.   The Classic lower is more versatile and adaptable than the older M4 dedicated lower and allows the buyer to use fixed or collapsible Swiss stocks as well as any style AR stock they might desire.

Swiss 552-LB with adapter and M4 stock.
