Anyone using it in either a 223 or a 300 Blackout?

5446 was my number...

You may have more luck here.

I use it for cast bullet loads in modern cartridges. That is a niche that powder fills in a way few others do.

Given the high price of 5744 I would consider using a different or more appropriate powder. I bet it would work alright in 300, though.

The only reason I'm interested is that somehow I ended up with 30 pounds of the stuff.

I tried it in .300blk with 165gr, 175gr, and 220gr jacketed bullets.

In my 12.5" rifle it gave poor groups (compared to the same bullets loaded over 1680) and only cycled at near maximum loading.

A bolt gun might make a difference, but I only have the AR in .300blk.

Otherwise I love it in 9.3x62mm.

I've had very good results with 120 gr bullets in my 300 blk, using something in the area of 18 grains.

I would use it more, but it's $10 a lb more than 1680, which also gives good results.

You can load a lot of 300 blk with 30 lbs!

Works well in my 416 Rigby...

Never thought about it in 300 Whisper.

I had a .223 load of 16.8g with a 55g FMJ-BT and an OAL of 2.230" that cycled and locked back on an empty mag.  It was more a proof of concept though.  I didn't pursue finding a top end load or chasing a group size.

I tried it in 300 Blackout.  Didn't much care for it in that round.

I do use it in 458 Socom with success.

I used it in a 300 WM ONCE.
The can said 3100-how was I to know?

I can tell you that 70.0 gr behind a 180 gr Sierra will yield 3400 fps exactly ONCE.

BTW, yes, I load 10.5 gr behind a 220 gr SMK as a Turkey load. Good accuracy and quiet as a church mouse in my Encore with YHM Phantom Ti

Have used it quite a bit in .300BLK, mostly because I couldn't find 1680 at the time. Works fine for subs with pistol gas, don't know about carbine. I use 10.3gr behind either a 208 AMax or a 220 Nosler Custom Competition. 1020fps with the 220s and 1050fps with the 208s (9 inch barrel). Burns very dirty at subsonic pressure levels, but it works.

I have also used it for supers with bullets from 123 to 155 grains.  Again, it works OK, but there always seems to be another powder that works better with any given bullet weight. If I had as much of the stuff as you do, I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

A word of caution when using it for supers. 5744 has a reputation of being very "peaky" near maximum load levels. That is to say, as you increase charges it can go from showing no pressure signs to blowing primers and trashing brass with very little warning in between. Stay within published data and work up in very small increments as you get near max. This won't be an issue with subs as you'll go supersonic long before you get to those pressures.

I have not used it for .223, but Western Powder does have a data guide .pdf on their website that lists some .223 data for 35-55 grain bullets.  Don't have a link for you at the moment (I downloaded it some time ago), but I'm sure you can go to their site and find it.
