Hey Ladies and Gents,

I'm a new owner of a Mossberg 590 Blackwater edition and so far I report I am very happy with my purpose.  I'm not brand new to the shotgun world but there are a few differences between the USMC issue version that raises a few questions.  Suffice it to say the one's I've fired before were VERY well broken in.

One thing I'm unfamiliar with is the action of the shotgun and what the proper procedures for racking the slide are.  It seems you can cycle the action with the trigger to the rear as well as forward.  I've never thought about it before but unclear if this causes damage to the shotgun, particularly to the safety pin at the rear of the trigger group (more below).

I've noted 2 areas where there seems to be excessive wear (metal-on-metal) and wanted to clarify.

1.  The safety pin on the rear of the trigger group.
2.  A forward part of the receiver, inside the chamber, on the top above the bolt.

Thanks!

(It's not much but a little gun porn as payment for your help...)

I have a 590A1 and just looking at the receiver only it has the exact same wear marks as the one you have pictured. I didn't take the rest of the shotgun apart but my guess is that it is normal wear.
Nice shotgun BTW.

The 590A1 is built like a tank I doubt if you can break it easily.

Thanks for the info, I wasn't too worried but wanted to check just in case.  Feels much smoother after the first 100+ rounds through her, can't wait to go again...maybe try a little trap/skeet.  It isn't the perfect trap/skeet gun but I hear people do ok.

Can't speak on #1 as I don't feel like taking my trigger assy out, but for #2 I have the same wear pattern you're GTG.

My 590A1 has the same wear, & my 500 does too. Just rack it like you need to. Your not going to hurt it.

Mine also has the same wear marks.

Remember that all those little flakes from the finish go somewhere and
it is usually up in the receiver.

I found the procedure of clean it really good, oil it all up, rack the slide 100
times then clean it again really makes everything smooth.

I do the deep cleaning with hot water, simple green and an old tooth brush.

Don't forget to liberally oil the parkerized parts with something like CLP after.

That is what I did with mine and now it is almost effortless to rack the slide.

The inside of my 500 looks much worse than that. Still cycles great and never misses a beat.
