Ive seen the red rock arms rifle and Ive seen a few sar-4800s in 5.56. Im no fal expert by any means so excuse me if Im beating a dead horse.
I was this rifle to be something I can use for home defense, and in a SHTF situation. Would the red rock be up to that? Does anyone know any anything else (sub $1700) available out there in 5.56? |

I would (and do) rely on an AR for my .223 SHTF needs. I'd take a Springfield SAR4800 in a pinch, but there's no f'n way I'd rely on a Red Rock ATR-1 for serious business. (Google Bobcat Weapons and Todd Bailey––draw your own conclusions)
I like the FAL platform....robust, easy to maintain. A DSA FAL is sitting within 3 feet of me, and there's a 50/50 chance that it'll be the rifle I'll grab if SHTF––but it's a .308. The AR platform is more ergonomic and has better sights and trigger. Maintenance is easier, parts are more available, platform is modular, and the AR is more accurate. I'd choose a .308 AR over the FAL but the 2 I've owned seemed to be a bit delicate for a battle rifle. |

I can shoot a few hundreds rounds out of my fal and there is little carbon to clean however if you pull the trigger 5 times on an ar it is dirtier than an fal that has had a few hundred rounds through the tube. I'm talking about internals here not the barrel. Just curious. I would still probably go for the ar over the fal in a shtf also just because I am far more familiar with it than I am the fal. |

He most likely means the DI gas tube |

gotcha. There are definitely a lot more ar's running around than fal's. They are kinda like the chevy 350 of the gun community. First, I'm no expert. But I suspect that this statement is incorrect. With more than 90 countries adopting the FN, I'd bet that there are a LOT more FNs out there. Now if your talking about the American civilian ownership, I would give you that. |

Adventurer_96 over at the Files has a Meeper conversion upper with AR-mag block for $800, I believe. He has a post in Marketplace. If you can find a complete FAL lower (they're non-registered; opposite of ARs) you'd be in business. Or buy a regular 7.62 NATO FAL, and switch out uppers at your whim. Best, JBR |
