I was looking at the Rifle Reloading Database and noticed there wasn't many load references for the SS109.

What type of powder do most of you guys use for this type of bullet.

H 322 or H 335. the speer manual says 23-25 grains of H335 for the 62 gr ss109.

It's hard to find a documented load for 62gr for .223, I have one of those consolidated load pamplets for .223 and can only find 1 or 2 in it.  Also in books and looking at manufacture's online data bases etc...  I found for H335 the lowest load was 22 and max was about 26.

I did a load work up from staring at 23gr with 0.5gr increments to 25.5 of H335, 10 rounds each.  I actually didn't even use the 25 or 25.5 grain loads as I had one high pressure case from one of the rounds I think it was a 23.5 or 24 grain load.

Anyway I decided to go with 22.6-22.8 grains of H335, loaded up about 28 of them and the functioned the gun fine.

I should note I am reloading for RRM16 and I was looking for a low end load that is safe and functions the gun correctly, accuracy doesn't mean anything for this gun.

I load 24 grains of H335 with wolf magnum primers in LC cases.

Ramshot TAC is also a viable powder.  I loaded up with the stuff when midway had it for $9.99 a pound and have loaded 5-6K rounds of the 62 grain SS019's. Decent accuracy and velocity but not M855 velocities.

Now that my TAC supply is diminished I use H335 with similar if not slightly better results.

Note: The Rem .223's max avg. pressure is 52,000 CPU and none of these loads exceed that limit.

Loads were worked up in Mil. brass so they don't have to be reduced for thicker Mil spec brass like LC.

I use 24.0 grains of TAC, Wolf 5.56 primers, and the SS109 bullet that I got from Wideners.

I have loaded a couple thousand of these from 1x fired LC brass and it works as well as anything in my Mini14.

I really like TAC because it seems like the only ball powder that i've tried in my Mini that doesn't give a large muzzle flash.

M-855 spec is 3025?? from a 20" 1x7 barrel...... you do not list the barrel length in which those forementioned velocity numbers were taken from.

I use 24.3gr of Win 748

Out of a Chrome lined 1x9 16" Bushmaster Nato chambered barrel I see pressure sign's at 26 grains. My load is 24.5 to 25.0 of H335. With these bullet's. If you have a Sammi spec chamber you may see pressure sign's at lower powder charge's. So start low and work up. Oh and my velocity is 2820 average with a high of 2915 in a 10 shot string. Velocity average same barrel same day from real Lake City ammo was 2977 with a max of 3015. I use Lake City once fired case's Winchester SR primer's. I did'nt see the need to go higher than 25 grains as this is just plinking ammo. Allthough 25.3 put me very close to the actual velocity of the real stuff.

i shoot ss109's with 24.5gr of AA2230, using a CCI 450 primer in LC brass, OAL is 2.260. The results are a consistent 2 moa from a 1:7 16" barrel.

I like 24-24.5 grains of H355 in LC cases but I only see about 2604-2690 fps out of my 16".

OK, I made 10 rounds of each fo the following.  All are Rem 7.5 primers, LC once fired bradd and SS109's.

24G - H335

24.5 - H335

25 - H335

My only question is about COL.  I used 2.45 with a very light Lee factory crimp.  Will this be OK or do I need to go with something shorter for the test loads?

From the new Speer manual I Quote:
62 gr FMJ BT, BC: .0307, SD: .177, COAL Tested: 2.255", this is from the page with the 62 gr load data.

The first page of .223 data says I quote:
Cart. Case: IMI, Primer used: CCI-400, 450*, Test Firearm: Ruger M77 MkII, Barrel Length: 22",  Note: CCI No. 41 primers can be substituted for CCI 450.

ETA:
Bullet should only be used with a 1:10 or faster twist.

I have the same manual it really does state that information, I think they put that there in reference to load data not to bullet design. As stated in other posts there is not much published data  for the m855 and if you look in several manuals for a bullet of similar weight you find a fairly wide variation of data.

I've had a lot of fun mixing up M855 duplication loads with the big batch of IMI SS109 steel core that I bought about 10 years ago.

The best powder I've found to drive those IMIs to 3025fps out of my 20" 1 in 7 Colt at 72 degrees has been H335.
