Going home for christmas and will finally get a chance to play with my FAR50 mk3.   All I have right now is API and Barnes 750 bore riders to load and I was just curious about what I should use for a ballistic coefficient for the API bullets.  Also, what kind of accuracy can I expect with hand loads (new mag-tech brass, US 869, CCI 35) using the pulldown API's?  A rough guess is fine–– I'm predicting around 2-3 MOA.

Thanks in advance for any help.  Can't wait to get this beast up and running.

A good Guestimate is around 0.65 for an API BC.  That's the approximate BC for ball and API is only a little lighter but the same basic profile.

If you weight sort and length sort them you can tighten up the grouping

Don't you have to resize pulled bullets before you use them or is it just some of them

Yes pulled bullets need to be resized before being reoaded

I have a LEE .510 bullet resizer die.  I'm going to have the pleasure of resizing all 500+ heads .  I may sort them by weight, too.  I'll have  to test it out and see how big of a difference it makes (sorted v. non sorted)

Info I've read is M8 API ballistic coefficient is .663 and the 647 M33 Ball is .68

I'd like to hear some reports on US869 powder in the 50BMG.

as long as you do your part
it will be noticeable

wasn't impressed with the 869
i prefer the H50 myself for my match stuff and the 5010 for my plinking/barrel warmers

For commercial powder and bullets of that weight range, stick with H50BMG.

Like I said, 0.65 is close for a BC.  May be some better data out there somewhere.

DEFINITELY size all pulled milsurp bullets through that Lee .510 sizer.  That's what I use.

And sorting by weight will help groups quite a bit.  I've heard tell of API shooting in the 1.25-1.5 MOA range with a rigorous sort and careful case prep.

Could you post pics of you resizeing the AP, does the sizer fit in the reloading press or is it by itself, and show how out of round the bullets are before you size. I reload for other cartridges but not the 50 as you can tell.

Sizer screws into the press...it's the same size as a standard 7/8" die.  There's a pusher attachment that attaches to your press ram using the shellholder-holder.  You lubricate the bullet then set it on the pusher and use the lever of your press to push the bullet through the sizer tip first.

Really simple.

It doesn't indicate whether your bullets were out of round, it just makes sure they aren't.  But if they are really out of round, they're a bitch to push through the die so you can tell when there is an especially bad one.

KD, why didn't you like US869?

wasn't as constant as the h50
869 is a ball powder (more temp sensitive also)
h50 is a extruded powder

What lube are you going to use?

you can always use a lite motor oil if you have nothing else

so I can use my Rock Chucker to resize the bullets and sort untill I get the bigger press. Thats cool I'll add a bullet sizer to the Christmas list. Thanks guys

yup
just take it easy
some of the way out of round heads can get jammed in the die
youll get the feel for it after a few
any ones that seam tough to resize you might want to run through the die a second time

I've had a few APs that needed so much force I thought something was going to break.
Do not go light on the lube.

Thanks for the catch Sandlewood

I think you meant to say do not go light on the lube.  The 1st bullet I sized I thought I had stuck and was going to break something.  I was using CHD's .5095 die with a RCBS Ammomaster.  Make sure your press is mounted to something solid and lube the die with your oil before putting the lubed bullet in.

THAT is the same die I use.

Resize every milsurp bullet -pulled or virgin.
You'll be suprised what you find occasionally!

When one sticks -screw the die up so the press is just camming over (maximum leverage)
...then screw the die down a little more and repeat until the bullet is through.

I use STP oil treatment as a resizing lube and love it.
A little messier than other lubes -but I've resized some football-out-of-shape projo's without them getting seriously stuck.

50Lbs of crushed walnut shells in a 2.5 cubic foot electric cement mixer (with the inside mixing padles removed) cleans them up like new.

I have been told the ALOX lube is for resizing lead, and NOT to use it for FMJ.

roger that KD185, thanks.  Hopefully I'll have better luck.  If not I'll just try H50 instead and use the 869 for plinking.

I was going to try imperial wax for resizing the bullets.
