Hey guys, I figured I would post this here, as it pertains more to loading than anything else.
I am building an AR, and the primary purpose of the build is for varmint hunting and a range toy. I was thinking about 300 BLK, but am not 100% set on that yet. I have a single shot .223 which works well for jack rabbits and small varmints, but is a bit light for coyotes and thick cover. I learned this the hard way yesterday, and lost a coyote in thick cover during a calling contest. I have never shot at a coyote beyond about 200 yards, at least while calling, but if I do shoot one I want it DRT, especially if I am hunting with others and money on the line. Does anyone have any experience with both the 300 BLK and 6.8 on coyotes? Any comparison? What bullets seem to work the best for coyotes? I am thinking a Speer TNT, Sierra Varminter, Nosler BT, or Hornady VMAX. I think these would give me better results than the .223 with 50 or 55 grain Sierra or Hornady SP's. I would be reloading for this cartridge, so the concern would be brass availability. This is not a concern with the 300 BLK, as I have a good supply of .223 commercial at my disposal. Thanks for any thoughts. |
