| I have been hearing great things about this round for a while now. Can anybody school me on this round? It's become popular for deer and antelope on some hunting boards I frequent. Would this round be good to go on elk too? |
| Flatter and faster shooting with greater range than the 308, no reduced recoil for the most part over the 308. I use a 20" 7mm08 Encore for my powerline hunting, I shoot 140gr Barnes TTSX and it is awesome. You could use it for elk potentially, a little light but as mentioned above if you do your job you will put the elk down, |
| I had a TCR-83 years back and I had a 7-08 barrel for it, one of the most accurate guns I had, recoil wasn't that bad, pretty easy to load for, if I remember correctly it did well with IMR-4064 and the lighter bullets. I had a chance to pick up a Remington 700V one time and passed, still kinda kick myself. |

I love this round. It is a short action .270 Winchester the real difference is only on paper between the two. I like SA rounds so I opted for this round when I was in your shoes OP. With the right bullet I would feel comfortable taking a short on an Elk as long as it was inside 150 yards. Honestly with some of the ammunition Hornady is putting out the performance of the 7mm Mag is only 200fps faster a the muzzle and Nosler is manufacturing 150 and 160 grain rounds in the 7mm-08 so I dont see a huge advantage the 7mm mag has over the 7mm-08 with regards to hunting Max Point Blank Range and close CXP3 game. Good Choice!

it's just a modern version of the well respected 7x57 mauser designed to fit in a modern short action. As long as "Modern" is defined as only 60 years old then yes. I know guys who were shooting 7mm-08 for metallic silhouette back in the late 50's only a few years after the .308 was introduced. |

I love this round. I have hunted with it for many years. With the .284 projectile it tends to shoot lighter bullets more accurately than a 30 caliber.
There are plenty of great 7mm bullets to choose from if you roll your own. All in all a great cartridge, low recoil, shoots lighter projectiles accurately, brass ealisly made from .308 brass if you like. Very efficient regarding velocity/grains of powder. You will not be dissappointed. |
