How reliable are 7.5 or 7.3in uppers compared to 10.5 or 10.3in uppers? I am torn between the two for my first SBR. Anyone have any experience w/ the CMMG 7.3? I am curious about their secondary gas block. Does it make it a better choice than the Noveske 7.5? How much louder is the 7.5 compared to the 10.5? |

general consensus until recently seemd to be: "stick with an 11.5" gun for your first". reason was that 11.5's generally ran fine, and shorter generally had problems or were finicky. it seems now that you can usually plug and play with a 10.5" upper any day of the week too. below that, people tend to have more issues then not. there are quite a few folks out there running 7.5's with no problems, and overall the noveske 7.5's seem to be spot on, but it's still a bit of a craps shoot from what i can tell. my first was an 11.5". i've beat the bejeezus out of it, and i've never had any problems. the 11.5" and 10.5" guns i've assembled subsequent to that have all been 100% also. remember too, most supressor comapnies don't really want their cans on anything shorter then [about] 10.5". something to consider if you were wanting to supress it in the future. |

My latest 7.5 is from Model 1. I always use a Levang compensator with the shorties and never need any adjustments or have any problem. Used to use a 9mm 2 piece mechanical buffer but have switched everything to the Enidine recently due to it being much smoother with 9mm. The 7.5 is definitely louder than the 10.5 but the Levang really helps. |
I'm sure it did help, but that was intention. I have no interest in shooting that short barrel unsuppressed. Its no fun at all. My new go to SBR for the home is a 8" 338 Spectre. Even unsuppressed, its no worse than a handgun - and its ballistics blow the 5.56 away. |
