Pick this up today for 15$ on a Facebook group.  Seemed like a good deal considering the shape.  Anyone have any suggestions for an ACU plate carrier?

$15?

Possibly fake, possibly broken, almost definitely stolen.

Enjoy.

From the front, that looks like a level IV Protech... maybe the NIJ04 version.

If you got it for $15, then Toki is almost certainly correct. That thing is either fake, broken, stolen, or some combination of the three. Either that or you're yanking our chains.

It dosent appear to be fake.
Anyway to test if if its broken somehow?

Hold the plate up on your fingertips, front facing up. Using your knuckle, rap on a corner of the top face and listen for the sound. If it's a nice ring, it's intact. If it's more of a "thud", it's cracked.

Same as testing for a cracked handgun slide.

That just gave me sore knuckles.... maybe i don't under stand.

Lay it flat , strike face up. hold on finger tips, knock on top end?

The idea is that you are holding the plate without your hand absorbing the impact of your knuckle. Hold it like this, and LIGHTLY rap your knuckle on the strike face:

Okay that's what i thought... It makes a noise.... but not what i would call a 'thud'. The strike face is padded, feels like a bunch of little hexagons.

If the plate is intact, it will ring like a pane of glass. Anything else and it is damaged in some way. Not saying it won't stop a round, but it is less than ideal and if hit on the damaged portion it may be no more useful than a piece of paper as far as armor goes.

Is it common to have padding on the strike face? Appears to be honeycomb like structure.

If you would, please quote my reply to your PM in a post here, in case anybody else has this question. Short answer, sometimes. Long answer, usually with Armorworks plates and sometimes with Ceradyne, varies by contract number, plate style, and manufacturer.

The exact construction varies by manufacturer and plate style, and even by contract number. I have had plates that were padded, yes. If you're taking it apart to inspect it, there should be an opaque black ceramic layer in front, followed by a similarly-thick layer of compressed, resin-reinforced fiber (usually white or off-white). These layers should be adhered together, and the entire assembly then wrapped in padding and/or a Kevlar outer covering to which the manufacturer labels are applied.

The plates I've seen with padding have usually been made by Armorworks, from what I can tell they always include a padding layer. I also had one style of ESAPI from Ceradyne that had a 1/4" layer of closed-cell foam between the ceramic strike face and Kevlar outer wrapping.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, makes me feel a little better about it being legit.

It's very common for anything that was NIJ0101.06 certified.

Very uncommon (almost non-existant) for NIJ0101.04 / 05 stuff.

Sounds like some of the older black .mil SAPIs.
Grab opposite corners and twist and listen/feel for cracking/flex/popping/etc(anything that would indicate it is not a solid plate)
