Please forgive the terrible description as I am unsure of how to describe my issue.

I have a newer production 870 express 4+1 that I have added a Wilson +2 extension (wilson ext., wilson spring, and follower). I have dremeled off the dimples and the follower still seems to hang up some. So I have taken some emery cloth sandpaper and smoothed out the mag tube to where it feels really slick. I haven't shot it since so don't know if that fixed the issue.

The new issue I have is when I load 6+1 rounds and rack the shotgun (Not smart but I don't have snap caps yet) without firing, I will get a shell to load into the chamber but then another shell will come out of the tube and be resting ontop of the carrier or loading gate (not sure of the correct term).

Any thoughts? Would a carrier dog spring from a police magnum fix the issue?

I can try to take pictures tonight if I get a chance.

Thanks for the help.

Sounds like you have an issue with the shell retainer. Consult a guide on assembly and look at yours.

Remington uses the same shell releases on all 870's including the Express and Police so replacing will do no good unless the release itself is damaged or defective.

The releases are staked into the receiver using a special tool so DON'T remove them unless you have access to the tool.
Brownell's sell several types.

The problem is probably a sticky shell release.
Take the trigger unit out, turn the gun over and operate the pump SLOWLY.
As the pump handle comes back you can see it push on the shell stop that releases the shell into the receiver.
As you push the handle forward you can see it push out in the other stop which allows a shell in the magazine to move a fraction of an inch back to the feed position.

That's likely the release that's causing problems.  When the pump handle goes forward it's supposed to allow the next shell in the magazine tube to move slightly to the rear.
If the release is sticking and not moving back out enough the shell will by-pass the shell release and will be pushed into the receiver giving a double feed like you're having.

Remove the bolt and pump handle assembly so you can get clear access and press the release toward the wall of the receiver.
It should move back out fully without sticking.  Pressing in on the release and you should feel plenty of strong spring tension with no sticking.

Causes for problems are:
Failure to clean a new gun of the factory preservative.  This gets sticky and can cause problems like shell release and failures to extract from the chamber.

Release is impacted with fouling or debris including debris left in by the factory.
Spray the under side of the release liberally with a Gun Scrubber cleaner, allow to totally dry, then spray in some CLP Breakfree.

Release is being jammed by factory burrs in the receiver slot.  This will usually require removing the release and stoning off the burrs.  Note the info above about having the correct tool to re-stake the release.

If you can't find the problem, best option is to send it back to Remington for a warranty repair, OR take it to a gunsmith who has a shell release staking tool so he can remove the release, fix the problem then re-stake it properly.

Thank you. It is quite possible that I didn't clean the gun well enough when I bought it.

Both the releases seem to be fine. With the shotgun upside down, the one on the right appears to have a good amount of tension and does not stick, it is slightly further back than the one on the left. Neither appear to be staked very well but they do not appear to move.

I have cleaned with Gun Scrubber and have sprayed with CLP. It will be awhile before I can shoot it, but thanks again for the diagnosis.

While racking the shells through earlier, it only appears to happen with the green shells below, not the red shells, or the winchester shells i have. Don't know if that is an issue.
