I took my new to me 16 gauge Wingmaster to the range today. I was shooting Herter's ammo in it from Cabela's. I experienced the following problem when shooting it:

Patterns really well. However, it has some extraction issues. First round extracted normally and ejected like a champ. The second shot required me to mortar it off the range bench while articulating the pump in order to unlock the action/ extract the case (which then ejected like a champ). The last round- I had to manhandle it a bit (no mortaring) to unlock the action/ extract the hull, which subsequently ejected. My hope is that my gun will be OK after I detail strip it and clean it.

My intention is to detail strip it and do a more thorough clean/ lube job. I'll probably also try another brand or two of ammo. (The nice thing about the Herter's ammo is that it's more economical than other brands- though in the past Dick's has had good prices on economy 16 ga loads). [If the Herter's ammo is a problem, I have unfortunately, already invested in a case of it]

Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Does the Herter's ammo have a brass base or silver colored metal base? Trying other ammo will determine if that is a variable.

If the gun is ammo sensitive polishing the chamber with a chamber flex hone – or oiled 0000 steel wool wrapped around a 16 or 20 cleaning jag - might help.

Herter's uses brass coated steel heads on their hulls. The shells are loaded in Italy. I believe they are Cheddite. I haven't shot a lot of Herter's in the past (in 12), but my limited experiences were good. In 16 offerings are a bit more limited....

If I can get other shells to work- great!

If not, then I'll look at polishing the chamber with hopes of improving things.

Herter's 12ga. Dove loads stick like a mother in my 870, almost as bad as Winchester Universal. They cycle unreliably in my 1100 too. The bases expand too much. I can shoot Herter's high base defensive loads no prob but their game loads suck. Bought one case and that was it, back to Estate. Too bad because I know Herter's is one of the easier to find 16ga loads out there. I still have a few boxes to kill and I use em for clearance practice now....

That's why I had assumed they would be good. IN 12 gauge, I have used their slug a pheasant loads uneventfully.

Make sure you clean your 870 really well especially the chamber areas. It seems like Remington packs extra oil/grease/whatnot in the barrel itself. So it is a bit rough. Simply take a brass brush and scrub the chamber really well with a good solvent.

As other suggested with ammo issue. I'm thinking that's a possibility especially with cheaper/foreign ammo. So try a few different rounds but first make sure everything is cleaned well before going to the extreme.

Mine is an older (1955) vintage gun, so I am confident that it is not a packing grease. However, I am going to detail strip it to make sure there isn't any debris or anything that I missed. The chamber/ bore looked good when I inspected them at (and after) time of purchase, but even giving that a little extra cleaning won't hurt I guess- you never know what  may have gotten in there over the years.

The more feedback that I am hearing, the more I am thinking that is likely the case. I have 2 additional loads on hand now- Fiocchi and Federal. The Fiocchi was advertised as being brass head, but is brass plated steel. The federal is also brass plated steel and uses a different hi-brass style head design. This will give me the opportunity to try a couple of different hull geometries, materials, etc.... Hopefully I will have good fortune.

Both the Fiocchi and Federal shells work perfectly

I just acquired an 870 Police Magnum trade in($259 shipped!!)

I had a similar problem after my first range outing yesterday morning.  I experienced the same issues and then went home to polish the chamber.

The steel wool on a cleaning brush on a low speed drill is good, just wipe a little oil all around beforehand.

You can also use 1" felt polishing wheels on a Dremel PEN tool, the handhald part that connects to your main dremel and you can use one-handed.  A normal dremel won't fit and can be problematic if it's chuck hits the chamber edges..  The 1" felt wheels are pretty uniform in the chamber size so you don't have to be as concerned with uneven polishing/surface levels as if using a small polishing tip.

Issue was ammo related. Cheap thin bases expanding and sticking in chamber.

Yup. The Herter's bases expanded to be measurably larger than either of the other brands.
