I posted this on The High Road, but I'm going to post it here also to make sure nothing is FUBAR.

Tonight I was checking the diameter of the safety retaining pin since I am replacing the j-lock on my 870 HD model with an old style safety. I was reassembling my 870, and I turned the barrel up to check and make sure the barrel was clean enough a small part came out. I don't know if its a part from something else, or if its a barrel part?

The picture is fuzzy, but I did include a penny for scale purposes. The part is thin, then thick through the mid part, and then a bit thinner again (sorry for lack of better terms). I have no idea what this could be, so does anyone have any ideas??

ETA: I did not replace the safety tonight, I was just checking what size punch I would need for when my parts come in.

That part goes in the same hole as the little spring for the safety.  It goes in with the fat side first, then the skinny sides apparently holds the spring in place.  Then you put the little pin in to hold the spring.  Sorry I don't know all the technical terms.

its the safety detent which rides on safety and causes the little click you hear when moving safety. its not the easiest part to replace but just rebember next time push the safety out with a rod of same diameter so detent and spring are retained. as somone else said the wedge shaped end poits toward safety and flat end to spring. hope i've.

Sorry about the late reply

It was not the safety detent, I never took out anything of the trigger plate when I found this in my barrel. I was just checking what size punch I would need, I never pulled anything out. Also, the safety detent was present when I converted over to the old style safety.

I was keeping my 870 in a 2nd hand gun bag, so I think it may be a part from the bag I got it from. I've had no issues with it out on the range, and everything works correctly. I think it was just something stuck in the bag.

Thanks anyways

ETA: The Remington Safety Key works great to push the spring down to convert back to the old style safety.

Tip on pic taking with camera, find the macro setting on it and use it for close ups. The icon on my dig cam is a flower. OUT. Tuna

My camera is extremely bad, it doesn't even have a display to check the actual images. You have to hook it up to a computer to even view the images. I think its time to upgrade
