I bought a factory 3 round magazine extension for my 870 Express Magnum. After I installed the new spring, I loaded it with 7, 2 3/4" rounds to make sure it fed. After I cycled the first two rounds, the other 5 rounds were sliding back and forth in the magazine tube. After taking the thing apart, I found the follower seems too big for the magazine ext. After about 1 ", the follower won't slide in the tube without really pusshing on it. It is a factory follower.
I coated the inside of the tube with Remoil, and it does ok with six rounds now. 7 =fail. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |
| Your feed tube sounds like it's got a very shallow depression or constriction in it. You could lightly sand the outside ID of the follower to accommodate the smaller ID of that area, or find where the follower hangs in the feed tube and sand the inside of that area. Either way, something's got to give. |

Don;t sand on anything just yet - this should be fixable without such a WECSOG solution. First, clean off all the Remoil you applied... a magazine tube is no place for oil, period.
Look inside the mag tube (on the shotgun and the extension) and look for any deformation, bumps etc. The 870 Express mag tube has dimples that can cause problems with the extension... start there. Report back and we can work through the problem. |

Just curious, why no Remoil in the mag tube? |

there are no moving parts inside the mag tube (metal to metal contact/movement) that need oiled. Oil in the mag tube will attract nd hold dust, dirt, grit, etc. Also some primers can be damaged/fail to detonate by oil soaking into them.
A quality plastic follower should need no lubrication whatsoever. Are you positive it is a 3 round extensions and not just 2 rounds? My 870 Police Magnum has the factory extension but only holds 6 rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber for a total of 7 rounds. I have never seen a 3 round factory extension. |
| It said 3 roundson the package. That being said, I only plan on keeping six in the mag tube. Our local department was keeping 7 in their 870's and the pressure on the rounds was causing them to deform. This caused feeding problems if the rounds sat in the mag tube for months. Thanks for the answer on the Remoil. I may just buy a new follower. |
