A friend of a friend has a Wingmaster Riot 870 that he wants to sell me for $200. I would normally jump on it but it has a little more rust on the parkerizing than I like. What should I offer and how can I get the rust off of the park?

How much rust are we talking about? Wingmasters are definitely preferable when compared with the Express line of 870's given the internals should be all metal, and for 200 bucks, that sounds like a smoking deal. Does it come with a factory magazine extension? If so, that's worth approx $100 on its own.

I don't know the best solution for cleaning up the rust, but depending on how much there is, $200 seems like a great deal to me.

If it is a Wingmaster we are talking about blueing, not parkerizing, unless someone parkerized it.  Parkerizing generally will not rust and if there is some on it then it will clean up with some oil and some elbow grease.   If it is infact bluing  then there could be pitting and that means work if you want it to look good again.

Comes down to how well the weapon has been maintained and if the outside was not maintained then the rest of the weapon was most likely not either.  You have to shoot it and know what to look for.  No  one can say it is worth $200 without looking at it.

Yes it has the factory extension and the gun is parked. He told me it was for 2.75 inch shells only and that kind of bothered me as I thought the Police versions shot 3 inch as well. He also assured me it was a Wingmaster and not an Express.

Not true. The early 870P's were indeed parkerized Wingmasters such as this one:

My 1983 barrel-coded 870P is also a Wingmaster, and bears that name on the receiver.

ETA: The older parked Wingmasters did not have magnum receivers or 3" chambers, so this may very well be what the guy has.

It looks exactly like that but with more rust, a mag extension, and a bead barrel.

Needs pics. It's impossible to appraise a firearm without pics, or even better having it in the appraiser's hands.

You can deal with the external finish.
A Wingmaster 12 with a factory extension for $200...?  Get your wallet out now!

I'd throw two ben franklins at his head so fast he'd probably be knocked out by the force of it. Best deal on a Wingmaster I came across so far was $150 for a standard 26" barreled with small ding on the reciever, busted stock and about 30% bluing left. It should be purchased asap.

I bought it. The reciever and barrel have a brownish patina to them, makes it look mean as hell. Thanks guys.
