I don't have a Remington but as far as i'm concerned you remove the clamp that is attached to both the barrel and the extension and the extension should twist right off, as it is just threaded onto the standard tube.
Remington owners, correct me if I'm wrong, i have a Benelli |

Undo the dohicky that connects the magazine extension and the barrel. Now you should be able to unscrew the magazine extension collar that is sitting in front of the forearm. This extension is under a lot of spring pressure, so don't launch it go into low earth orbit, or into your eye. Withdraw the spring and you're done. ps normal warning about gun being empty, no kittens hurt etc. |

Unscrew the screw from the barrel clamp and remove the clamp.
Unscrew the extension tube, LEAVING THE COLLAR ON THE GUN. WARNING: the magazine spring is LONG and STRONG. It'll try to escape with great force as soon as the extension comes free. Open the action half way, then unscrew and remove the collar from the gun. NOTE: Some guns are coming from the factory with the collar screwed on so tight, you may need to use a small strap wrench to get it loose. To reassemble: Screw the collar on finger tight, then give it one more "click". It should be down snug, but you should be able to remove it with just your fingers. Replace the spring then screw the extension on until it JUST contacts the gun's magazine tube. Screw it on too tight, and the pressure can cause the tubes to misalign, causing jams. Fail to screw it on until the tubes make contact and there'll be a gap between them, causing jams. Replace the clamp and the clamp screw. |

Screw the collar on finger tight, then give it one more "click". It should be down snug, but you should be able to remove it with just your fingers. New 870s don't come with the spring-loaded ball detent on the ring of the barrel (most likely as a cost cutting measure), so many won't hear a click. These new detent-less barrels will inevitably loosen over time, since the collar has nothing to lock into. It also explains why they are rather tight from the factory. This is a bit tricky because tightening it down too much will cause jams (like you mentioned), but not enough torque results in it loosening up and possibly misaligning the barrel. In my experience, finger tight is not enough and I needed a tiny bit of extra torque with a wrench. My Wilson front sling mount came with a detent so fortunately for me this is no longer an issue, but its still disappointing nonetheless. Edit: I'm not sure if the high end 870s (Wingmasters and Police) still have the ball detent. |

This is a cheap move by Remington, even Mossberg Maverick 88s have the ball detent. Thankfully I bought the 870P were Remington doesn't make cost cuts. |

I've owned both the 870 Express HD 7-shot in 20ga and the 870 TAC Desert Recon, both came with extensions from the factory and do not have the ball detent. I am pretty sure the new Expresses and Express Tacticals lack them as well. I don't know if new Wingmasters and Police models have that detent so I've edited my original post to clarify. |
