I just took possession of my fathers 30 year old 870 which sat under his bed in a zippered case since it was new.
He hunted with it one time and liked his double barrel better so there it sat.
I took it to the range to try it out and when I pulled the trigger it only went click.  No BOOM.
This gun is like new.
Any ideas on fixing it?

Did you take it apart and clean it? If you did, did you properly reassemble it?

A thorough disassembly and cleaning for starters.  It it really sat that long no telling what the insides of that thing are like.  If I were to guess my first place to look would be the firing pin channel.

I did clean it.
It was the first time I ever took one apart though.
I hope i got it together right.
I think I do anyhow.
Will it fit together if it's wrong?

I don't think you can put them together wrong. God knows, my students try. The firing pin may be jammed up or missing entirely.

Were you shooting his 30 year old ammo too?

If it sat that long, oil may have gummed up the works.  Get yourself some spray degreaser (gunkout or brake cleaner) and spray it in and around the firing pin.  Make sure you get it moving by hand then take it back and try shooting it again.
