I have a couple of upgrades that I would like to do to my shotgun.  One is to replace the mag follower.  Is there any real improvement in replacing the factory follower, aside from a different color?  I've already added a +2 mag extension and replaced the mag spring.  I haven't had any issues with the factory follower, but it looks pretty weak.  I'm on the fence with this.  Any thoughts or experience?

I put the stainless vang follower in mine. Came with the +2 extension. It would jam up in shooting so I put the original back in. If the original doesn't jam then there's no reason to change it. Unless of course you wanted to, if so then go ahead.

you just got to be careful when getting a aftermarket follower. some will take away 1 round due to its size and some will not be compatible with the extensions or some springs that cause jams. I say if the stock follower works fine just keep it especially by buying 1 and the average price for 1 is $20 or more plus shipping you are just taking a gamble on some of them. but if you would like to still buy one I would contact the manufacture and ask them and if you have problems with if can you get a full refund including shipping.

save up for the timney adjustable trigger, it's a better upgrade for the 870.

I also took the bolt out of mine and polished the contact points, it cycles more smoothly now.

(I assume you have a magazine extension already installed on the shotgun?)

I've tried both the Choate and the GG&G, and both caused malfunctions.

I kept the stock follower.

it's not like you're going to get a performance upgrade with it, so I'm a little confused as to why change it at all..

I went with the Brownells Aluminum follower.  When I was doing research I seem to recall that the Aluminum version would last long but not have additional wear on other parts.  I like mine in red and highly recommend.

Brownells

Has anyone ever broken the factory follower?

Seems like a solution in search of a problem.

never.. (and I've been to Argentina dove hunting when we ran through 3,000 shells - our hands bled in the first few hours)

some people want a color that stands out so they know they're empty.
(personally, I think anyone worried about that needs to take a tactical shotgun course or watch Magpul's Dynamic Shotgun series)

I have the GG&G follower, and have not had any issues.

I did have several burrs inside the magazine tube however.

I once received a LEO trade-in 870 from Summit Gun Broker with a broken factory follower. It can happen, but it's definitely rare. Replaced all my 870 followers at once with the green Wilson Combatfollowers and they were GTG.
