I'm in the planning stages of my next project a 9mm pistol can with a booster.
Ive been looking for info and haven't found much (my google fu sucks) This isn't my first F1 in fact its my 5th (2 5.56 cans and 3 .22lr) My idea is a semi homemade can (7.6" SDTA B tube W/ liberty Booster) and either 17-4 and Ti Cones and Spacers or K Baffles I'll be shooting subs and supers thru it . I have wondering what the maximum practical weight of a boosted pistol can is? from what Ive seen most commercial cans are in the 7-12 oz range Is this with or without the booster? If it is by the time you add a booster ~3oz the tube and cap ~7.5oz your already over 10oz. By the time you add 8 baffles you are looking at nearly 14oz. If not sub 10oz seems doable. Maybe lighter if I use 7075 instead of Ti for the baffles. I know the SDTA B tube is a pig @ .082" Wall and could probably be thinned to .050" or so between the threads and the end cap could also loose some weight, that would shed nearly 2.25oz . What kind of wall thickness is sufficient?... Or at least what kind of muzzle pressure does 9mm or .357 Sig make ? I Can figure it out from there. Then that brings me to blast chamber length. How much does length affect FRP on a 4" barrel ? Finally Cones or Ks? Ks are suppose to be quieter but most commercial cans use cones. I thought Ks for subs and Cones for supers but what works for both? Maybe a few of each? Sorry for all the questions |
| Well you pretty much outlined my next build. Stamp should be in next 2wks or so. I turned tube down by .02 between threads, it shaved about 1.5oz off tube. I'm going with K's. First will be Ti and rest aluminum. I figured weight down to 12-13oz last time I added it up, including booster. A .41 hole will also cut a lot of weight out of the endcap. I may still take of .01 off over the threads as it is a tad proud of the booster and the same with the endcap. I'll also be notching endcap for easier removal with spanner type wrench. I'm still iffy on suppression at this point, due to others comments about sub par volume, but I'm gonna see it through. Also, I filed mine at 9.25", that's with the booster attached. |

I know the SDTA B tube is a pig @ .082" Wall and could probably be thinned Diversified Machine makes a 1.375" Ti tube that thinner. So lighter and more volume. ID is 1.259" so most 1 1/4" internals are a direct drop in. He sells the other parts but 1 1/4 Ti tube would for spacers, and 1 1/4 a common size for Stainless Plugs and all types of Valve retainers. Same size as most commercial tubes so you are good with common suppressor height sights and such. Cans are pigs on pistols, so pay close to attention to saving weight where you can. |

Does the Mystic booster thread directly into the D tube, or is there an adapter? Quoted:

6" SDTA D Ti D tube with freeze plugs and Mystic booster. If you use the B sized tube, it threads directly to the booster. The D sized tube needs an adapter to neck it down a bit. |
