The locking teeth on my M4-2000 seem to be wearing out. I can now unscrew the suppressor from the mount without much force and the two teeth in the ratchet mechanism appear very worn. Is this a piece that is serviceable by AAC? Anybody else ever have this issue?

You need to call AAC and tell them. They will have you send it in and they will replace the latch under warranty.

I've wondered about this.  Any chance this is a user serviceable replacement? I'd like to keep some extra latches on hand. Shipping the whole thing seems like such a waste of time effort and expense.

No can do.

The equipment needed is pretty special from what I understand to just get the pin out of the can that holds the latch in.

Next problem. and the main one, ATF considers that a silencer part so you having an extra one is illegal

They will fix it for you. I had a bad latch from the get go, one with improper heat treat. They took care of me and my new latch will last many years to come, not wearing at all like the old one did

Dude it makes absolutely no sense to me either.

Just telling you what AAC has told me and how the ATF has ruled on it. ATF isn't known for making logical decisions

The ATF does not work off logic.

Ever see a sig brace?

Edit: beat me to it by seconds

Pretty much this. The AAC latch is a silencer part, but iirc, the Surefire latch is user servicable (not sure if anyone has ever needed one.... fwiw...). The Saker mounts are mounts and not silencer parts... It makes no sense.... Welcome to the ATF.

They'll cover the trip both ways.

Its no cost to you and you will only be without your can for a week or two.

Very painless when I had to have my latch replaced IMHO

In the future, be sure to hold down your latch as your screw it on..........there wont be any wear then.

Thanks everyone, I'll give AAC a call tomorrow.

I anticipated this, and keep the latch depressed until it is screwed on.
It's kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation for them.

If you let the latch engage & ratchet the teeth every time you put it on & take it off, one or the other is going to wear. I assumed my latch wasn't super-hard, so it wouldn't kill all my mounts so I am careful.
But, they did have a bad batch of soft latches from what I've read, I'm sure they'll take care of you. Try keeping it depressed until it is tight in the future & I'll bet it never happens again.

ETA: NM, I should have read the thread before I posted.
