Will be shooting Crows and Coyote out to 300 yards.  Is the ACOG up to the task or should I look for something else?

What is a normal price for the ACOG?

700-800 bucks.

Get something else if your pocket book can't take the hit.

unless you need a "combat style optic" a good leupold 3x9 will do fine a lot cheaper. If its just shooting stuff/varmints, cheap scope will be fine, if it double as a SHTF/defense weapon-get the ACOG.

Thanks for the replies.

This will be used for work.  Crows and coyote are basically the range in size of animals that will be targeted (an occasional deer should be thrown in as well).

It will double as a shtf/defense/fun gun.

100 - 300 yards would probably be the normal range, but longer distances would not be out of the question.

This is a business investment.  Willing to spend the money on a quality optic, but only if it is necessary (I'm like everyone else only want to spend what I have to).

Thanks again.

I love the Trijicon products but I can never justify spending 900 + for a 4X optic.  I also don't like that the ACOG does not offer any eye relief and I personally don't like being right on top of the optic, but that is mainly becuase I am used to traditional scopes.  They are good quality optics and many people love em but I guess it comes down to if it will suit your needs.

You can get a great optic for $200-$350, unless you are planning to try use your rifle after you blow it up you do not need to spend more.

There is very little difference between a Nikon 3-9 for $300 and a Nightforce for $1200 the cross hairs are finer, if you drop it it won't loose zero, the picture is better when there is no light out there to magnify.

However its hard to justify the extra $1000 for a civilian.  Three years ago the Acogs were the rage and were always $1000 plus now they are cheaper demand has dropped alot and the rabid defense of the over priced 4x scope has dropped off.

I have never liked the ACOG it simply looked cool thats all.  For what you want a simple 3-9 or 4-12 will fit the bill well.

take a look at BSA they make good optics for a person on a budget.

I never understood why anyone would pay over $1000 for a 4x fixed power scope (ACOG).

Then I finally got one .  The glass is as crisp and clear as can be and offers a wide area of view.  I've got a Leupold M4 illuminated reticle variable power 2.5-8 scope on one of my other rifles that cost about as much but isn't nearly as nice as my ACOG.

ACOGs don't make much sense on paper.. but once you use one you'll be hooked.  I'll be getting a compact ACOG for my next build.

Does anyone else make a scope that is similar in size to the ACOG?

What is a normal price for the ACOG?

For similar in size you could try the IOR 3x25. The glass is very sharp, but ive never tried out an ACOG so I cant compare.

i have the same model with the chevron, but i think you can find it cheaper. don't forget about a good mount which will add to the cost.

This is with the mount.

ta11 has a bit more eye relief but is only 3.5x.  ta31 is 1.5 and ta11 is 2.5 I think.

You may want to try look at them before you lay down the $$$.

I think the glass on the acog's are excellent.

+1, the factory thumbscrew mounts are garbage. I've had 2 ACOGs that wouldn't hold zero because the mounts won't tighten without using a screwdriver on the slotted thumbscrews, which takes the utility of having a thumbscrew in the first place away.

+1 on this IOR above, i have had both NSN acog and this IOR, IOR is much better, the eye relief is great on the IOR, acog you end up putting the charging handle half way in your mouth.

I own two TA11 and was hooked - great eye relief and glass.  Then I bought a 2.5-10x Accupoint!  Still like my acogs but the accupoint has to be the best GP scope that I have ever bought - even with the triangle recticle.

Bought me a very lightly used TA11D today at the Funstore.... for $600!!

*WHOOT!!*

The only way it could have been better would have been if it were for .308 cal...

ETA: and it would have been better in Amber. My TA33 is wayyy brighter in low light than the TA11's Red reticle.

Should check out the Millet DMS-1.
Adjustable 1-4x optic with illuminated DoD like an eotech, but better.
Can also be used w/o illumination with normal reticule.

Very good optic, and I love it on my AR, and soon on my STG556.
