I started with this from CTD for 9.93:

I ordered some nylon straps and some buckles from here:

I replaced the crappy 'nub and loop' fasteners on the mag flaps with plastic buckles, and I replaced the crappy cotton abdominal strap with a nylon strap and a buckle.

I had to hand sew the female end of the buckles to the mag pouches which was a bitch, and my skill with a needle and thread isn't great so the stitching isn't that pretty.

Anyway here is what I ended up with:

Wearing it

The back

I'm just going to leave the grenade pouches as they are for now, maybe I can find a use for them.

Overall I'm pretty happy how it turned out, its much more sturdy than I thought it would be.

good job

next time you may want to look at reversing the female onto the lid and male half on the pouch body

Chinky Rig mods were some of the first I did

Duly noted, I think I might try to build one from scratch next.  It was fun to build.

What did you do with the grenade pouches?

If the pouches hold 2 mags you can try something like this http://www.diytacticalstore.com/catalog/index.php/1-side-release-buckle-foliage-green-1.html . They are way quicker when closing than the standard quick release buckles.

Nice job, very low profile rig. Often times, the best rig is the least expensive and simplest.

I can see that listing for $350+ at high end gear manufacturers.

Maybe you can fit a radio pocket on the side.

Seem to recall they also made a 4 mag pouch wide version, instead of the 3 mag you have.

I was interested in the rigs and am glad to have seen you post here.

Looks good! Similar to what I did, I didn't think of buckles though, I like it.

Here is an idea if you can't figure out what to do with your grenade pouches.

grenade pouches can be used to hold speed loaders, hand cuffes,  loss ammo or parts.

yes.

Not to thread hijack, but it is relevant.

Thanks.  Both Mods are pretty cool.  I like the old 56 type rigs,  but hate the wooden toggles.  Good work guys!

I'm looking to get into this myself and read somewhere, I forget where, that some people prefer the 3 main mag version over the 4 saying they think it's more comfortable and/or fits better, or some the other way around.  Is there any particular rhyme or reason to this, or just individual preference?

prob  preference, im 6ft 168lbs and the 3 mag version spans my chest width wise. I like having my rifle mags on my 'front' and don't mind having my pistol mags and blow out kit under my armpits a bit.
